Bottom Bracket- BB386 Evo Question
Hi, Just wondering about my BB.
Sorry if this sounds dumb but anyway....I have a Wilier Cento 1 SR with Ultegra. The BB is BB386 Evo. When the BB needs replacing what bottom bracket do I order to replace it with? Ultegra or FSA or are there other options (Maybe something like Chris King or other high end Ceramic bearing thingys). Can I just order the bearings or do I need the Nylon cups aswell? I do most of my own servicing and am quite proficient, I've just never had to replace a BB so before I have to I want to know what parts I'll need when the time comes, or if I leave it to my LBS what to tell them put in.
Cheers in advance and apologies for my stupids

BB386EVO is the same as BB30, but with the bearings spaced further apart. If your frame has the bearings set in nylon cups which are in turn pressed into the frame, you need pressfit-30 (PF30) bearings; if the bearings are pressed directly into the BB shell, then you need BB30 bearings. In either case you'll need a suitable drift to remove the old bearings and a suitable press to install them. Park Tool make both tools, but you can also improvise a drift using a piece of wood, and a bearing press using a threaded bar and suitable washers and nuts. SRAM, Token, Rotor, Wheels Mfg and many others make both PF30 and BB30 kits.
For BB30 you can also buy the bearings on their own from Simply Bearings or Wych Bearings; this will be cheaper than buying them from a bike manufacturer; look for "6806" bearings. This is a good way to do a ceramic upgrade (priced at more than £100 for a SRAM kit) since the Enduro 6806 is about £22 per bearing raw, and you can get ceramic hybrid bearings for about £15.
In theory you can reuse the existing PF30 cups with new bearings, but repeated removal and installation of the cups will affect their fit. It's still cheaper to buy a SRAM PF30 kit, throw the steel bearings in it away and replace them with off-the-shelf ceramic 6806s than it is to buy a SRAM ceramic PF30 kit.0 -
Thank you, that's exactly the info I'm looking for0

Just an added caveat.
Make sure any bearings you buy are specced to take the 24mm spindle of your Ultegra crankset. FSA and some other BB30 cranksets have a 30mm spindle diameter so just check thoroughly that the new bearings will be compatible.
EDIT - forget the above - your set-up will probably come with adaptors to allow the Hollowtech crankset to be used with the BB30 bearings0 -
OP has Ultegra cranks - so it really depends on what type of BB/adaptor has been fitted. Complete BBs from Praxis or KCNC give better bearing alignment / more durable than using the original bearings with adaptors IMO.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

386 uses press fit 30 cups and bearings. PF30 has plastic cups and was introduced to accommodate frame manufacturers who were incapable of boring the round hole demanded by the metal to metal fit of BB30. The plastic deforms to take up the sloppy frame tolerance.
I changed the creaking PF30 BB in my Cento uno SR for an all metal wheels manufacturing BB (native 386 crank). It was a bit of a struggle getting the nicely machined BB into the oval hole in the frame, not looking forward to the day that it has to come apart.0
