Spoke length help

So I've decided to build my new cross wheels myself. My road wheels are hand built and I thought wheel building would be a good skill to learn so I've booked onto a local course. They are happy for me to turn up with my own bits so I can learn on my own wheels and build them at the same time.

So I'm going for novatec 771 and 772 hubs and stans Grail rims. I've used an online spoke length calculator and used the info below.

Rim erd = 590

Front hub
Left flange pcd = 58
Right flange pcd = 45
Left flange to centre = 21
Right flange to centre = 36

Rear hub
Left flange pcd = 58
Right flange pcd = 49
Left flange to centre = 21
Right flange to centre = 34

They will be 28 spoke wheels built 3x.

For the front I got 289.2 disc side and 291.6 drive side. For the rear I got 289.2 disc side and 291.1 drive side. So I could use 289 mm spokes for the disc side and 291 for the drive side. Does this sound right?

Also I'll be using brass nipples but I take it the standard 12mm will fine. Or will I need the 14mm?

Hopefully I'll bring my listening and patience head to the course.

Cheers ugo, that's changed the values by a mm so helpful to know. 12mm nipples will be fine I take it?

  • Yes.

Normally the rear of that hub builds with equal lengths left and right, while you have 3 mm difference between left and right.
I would go 3 cross, even with 28

I entered the values tohttp://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/ and selected disc build.

You've had experience building with those hubs and rims so I'd rather take your input than the spoke calculator. What lengths would you recommend? Even using 588 it gave me values of 288 disc and 290 drive side.

Yes 3 cross lacing is the plan.

  • If you only have access to even lengths I would use 290 rear and 288/292 front... if you have access to odd lengths too, you can fine tune it according to the calculator
