Hi there

I am hoping for some help. My winter bike has been unused for far too long and with the new year I thought it would be time to get back on the saddle. However I have a slight problem, the chain has looped itself a few times And I can't get it to straighten. This has rendered my bike unusable. I have attached a picture below and if anyone could guide me through how to untangle it I would be much appreciated. If I can't fix it it's going to involve carrying my bike a good 2 miles to the nearest bike shop :(

Many thanks for any help.

  • They are called gorlins. If you push the two together they usually cancel each other and go away.

Does the chain have a quick link fitted?
  • Get a chain tool split the chain , take it off and untangle (re fit using a kmc split link)or go and buy a new chain.

Difficult to describe, easy to do.

Take the chain off the chainring to give you some length to work with. Looking at the loop on the left, push the left part of the chain into the loop to extend it. Continue increasing its size. Eventually it will meet the other loop and both will drop out.

Alternatively, the link going behind the chainstay looks like a quick link. Just take this out and reassemble.
  • I would suggest burning the whole bike. It is the only solution
  • As others have said this is dead easy to do but hard to describe - Move the loops along the chain until they are adjacent to anpther one then you can see which part of the chain to lift to cancel them out. If there is no common side obvious move one of the loops all the way along the chain to be adjacent on the other side. It's quite logical if you get the loops adjacent just takes patience - once you see how it works it obvious but until then ...
  • As the chain disappears behind the frame you can see there is a quick link fitted. If you blow the picture up you can see it clearly. So disconnect and sort out.
