Removing Stripped Torx bolt

As part of my continuing SRM woe, I was trying to remove the axle and drive side crack with a t20 torx bit. The first bolt cs,e out OK, but the rest seem to have rounded out at the top. Leaving aside my continuing gripe about bike manufacturers making important bolts out of cheese, what's the best way to proceed?

I don't want to drill them or apply heat due to the sensitive electronics behind them, so what are my other options?

There are 2 basic types of extractors -
    1) a 'left-handed' screw tread that digs into and grips the worn metal.
    2) a square or hex shape that is forced into the worn metal for grip.

Both of these typically use pre-drilling, but you might get lucky .....

Since the screws on the SRM are probably quite small, you might inquire at specialty shops that deal with radio controlled cars, airplanes, model trains, etc. They usually have specialized tools for small parts.

  • It's not easy to round the head of a Torx bolt if you're using the right size bit.

In fact, I would say it's almost impossible, especially with a decent size like 20 and up.

Cut a slot in the head with a Dremel and use a flat bladed screwdriver.
