Chain skipping

The chain has been skipping on my Felt Z95. Any pressure on cranks and they jump forward. It felt exactly the same as when the freehub went on a previous bike. So I had the freehub replaced, still there, tried a different wheel, still there. It is happening in both chainrings and all gears on the cassette. The chain is new. I've been having chainsuck problems with this bike and remember the chain getting jammed between the small chainring and chainstay around the time that the skipping started. Is it possible that both chainrings were damaged at the same time by the chainsuck? It only happens when on the bike, so I can't see what's actually happening when I have it on the stand.

    Chainrings badly worn out?

If the chain is new is the cassette older? That's the most common reason for slipping - the new chain won't mesh with the older cassette.

Chainrings last much longer and its a bit unusual for them both to wear out at the same time.
I'm left handed, if that matters.
  • The chainrings aren't worn out. About 2000 miles on them but they look fine.

The chain is new but the skipping was there with the old chain as well. I replaced it as it looked damaged after it jammed against the frame.

The skipping/slipping started suddenly on both chainrings, which makes me think something is damaged rather than worn?

How old is the cassette? If the old chain had particularly bad wear then the cassette might be due for replacement too.

It's worth noting that chain + cassette can wear pretty swiftly, especially at this time of year.

What k dog said. Change cassette and chain at the same time. I do three chains per cassette then swap both

^thanks. That's what it sounds like. The chain wore out so much that it slipped on the cassette. The cassette wore out too - but different cogs will wear at different rates so the chain starts to slip because nothing quite meshes.

You put a new chain on and it still slips because the new chain still doesn't mesh with the worn out cassette. Change the cassette too and you should be fine.

Like Jeff says if you change the chain earlier you can get a few chains to a cassette but if you wait too long you have to change both (and if you leave it way too long then it will be chainrings too).
