Yes - it's the only day that you can stop and fix a flat and still get a KoM! 8kmh - it has to be one of the slowest especially for a pan-flat piece of road! 8)ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Today I was 1192 th place out of 3381 on a hill climb segment. And it still gave me the KOM !
It'll be gone this time tomorrow.
I thought I was fit and cycled well, so the other 1191 must fantastic. Unless theres 100's of people within 1 or 2 seconds of each other."The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -

There will always be people faster than you.0 -
I had no idea of that the Strava stuff started 1st Jan, thought I had over achieved on my 40 miler today, what a giggle. KOMs all over the route, I will have to take a screen shot. They will soon all be wiped out. Enjoy your moment. HNY to all.0

Sh*t - wish I had known - my only chances!!
Ah well, at least I still get described as an athlete on there!!0 -
I never managed to go for a ride, which is a shame. The wind has been bad though, so i'm not too bothered.
I would like some KOM's though.0 -

Load of blinking nonsense IMO. I went out for a potter yesterday and there were cups/crowns for every single segment when I uploaded. I can only assume they have done this to try and inspire folks who won't be able to get on an 'all time' leaderboard...but the easy solution there is just filter a segment by time (This Week/Month/Year, etc.). Hence, this is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist!0

Misery!
I got 19 sweet trophies on one of the slowest rides of my life, i felt reals good.0 -

Agree it's a bit silly at this time of year but, if like near me, you've had annual stage races or pointy hat racers through, there's not a cat in hell's chance of competing with your fellow local riders for a KoM of any sort - so it does at least reset something to put the fun back into it. There are also a few roads that used to be lovely and smooth and have been resurfaced with ultra-coarse material - again, you've no hope. And Strava is meant to be for fun!ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -

We've got a few of those roads around here as well, which has made it nearly impossible to get any kind of decent rankings on the all-time leaderboards. I stand a chance on a few stretches now when on my faster commutes. I'm looking forward to getting out on the bike finally.0 -
The biggest thing for me is not the KoMs but the 2015 PRs.
Like many I've lost a bit of fitness and put on some weight during the winter / christmas so seeing an improvement through the spring is going to be a powerful motivator. Rather than comparing against my best times from last summer.0 -

Which makes this thread and the OP even more of a nonsenseI'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0 -
At first I thought it would be a little gimmick, but after going out for a quick blast this morning (it was a bit more grim than I could be bothered with yesterday) it did give an extra incentive to push a little harder than normal on a couple of climbs, including getting an actual pb on one of my regular hills by a massive margin and just a couple of seconds off another which is a nice surprise at this time of year.
It will also be nice to see some medals later on in the year as well but I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon enough- hopefully it won't become too annoying though.0 -
It's not just 1 Jan though as I got a couple today while pottering around. Maybe they should reset the tables every week0

New Year KOMs still coming through today. I got a couple using my singlespeed  Did put a bit of a spring in my step all the same, especially as the weather was c**p. Oh, and discovered that Goretex is indeed waterproofTitus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...0

Set a KOM and two seconds on my mountain bike with big knobbly tyres on a regular road rider route.
KOM Lasted about two hours and keeping the pace up nearly finished me off. You forget how much easier it is on a road bike0 -

did you get an alert from strava saying youd lost the KOM.0 -

No and I don't think I did when I lost the other proper KOM last year.0 -
As a new Strava user I'm really enjoying racking up the KOMs and trophies. On the 1st day of the year I had 41 trophies and today I picked up another 37. Then I look at the details of the segments and realize how much faster other people are than me. But like someone else said, its motivating all the same.0
-
...but where's the motivation in a KOM or leaderboard cup when you know you picked it up bimbling along? A friend of mine got a KOM yesterday on a climb where he punctured, stopped to fix it and yet he still got a 2015 crown.
The best accolades are those earned, not given out free in the first week of January. At this rate, I think there will be a lot of folks lacking motivation in Feb when the weather is cr@p and normal segment order has been restored.
Perhaps Strava will introduce February 2015 KOMs0 -

I can understand why they could *possibly* become unmotivated from that happening, but I doubt that is the general cycling communities perception of them. If you do stay at the top, you can work harder to better that KOM, or if you lose it you can train to get it back.0 -
It suits me down to the ground, with a new baby recently arrived the commute is about the only riding I'm getting - and to beat any of my longstanding PRs requires a clear road, a favourable wind, good legs on the day and a willingness to hurt myself. In the absence of a strong tailwind I haven't even been trying, leaving strava rather mundane.
Well, you can bet I'm going to be hammering it for the next fortnight to try and set some halfway decent yearly KOMs. The longer they last, the happier I'll be.0 -
Sounds as pointless as running 100m on the school field and claiming you beat Usain Bolt.0
-
If that sounds pointless to you, then Strava segments aren't for you. The whole thing is pointless. If you want to race and get some actual 'Kudos', there's plenty of real events you can enter.
If you recognise it for a bit of fun, and a way to motivate yourself to work a bit harder then good luck to you.
Incidentally, there's quite a few chaps who ran 100m faster than Usain Bolt last year:
http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/sp ... enior/2014
I don't know how much respect you'd give Justin Gatlin, Asafa Powell and the other known drug users on the basis of their achievement, but for Kim Collins to have managed that at the age of 38 (ten years older than Bolt) sounds like a pretty good bit of work.0 -
I like strava segments but some KOMs are pointless. If it was up to me I wouldn't award a KOM until at least 30 people had ridden the segment.0
-
But the whole thing is completely pointless, and that's why it's so great. So get out riding your bike and have some fun.0
