Hello,

I am looking at purchasing my first ever road bike with a budget between £600-800, mainly been looking at 2014 models to maximise my budget potential. What bikes would you recommend? I am looking at completing an ironman within the next two years so it would have to be capable of carrying me through that but with a bit of upgrading. Open to all brands.

Cheers

  • That planet bike was highly rated @ £799, I went for it still waiting for the delivery

  • Honestly I'd buy secondhand at that budget if you can. At least take a look through the classifieds on here if you don't feel brave enough to chance eBay.

    Planet X
  • How does the Planet X match up to the Caad8 105, I know the Planet X has the 105 equivalent on but the rest of the spec? Evans has it for £769. New to this game you see. Thanks for the replied

I sold a Lappiere Xelius full ultegra with mavic equips on here this summer for £750, stunning bike hardly a mark on it , as good as the planet x is, it would not have been a patch on the Lappiere for that money.
    go 2nd hand

The Caad8 frame is a country mile above anything else in this price range, and with (mainly) 105 it's a no brainer (especially if 11spd) ...

I'd only go 2nd hand if you know enough to recognise shot chains/sprockets/pads/wheels and can track down replacement parts and then replace them without having spent more than you would have buying new.

    Planet X for me.

Great frameset, new Shimano 105 (11sp), Mavic Aksium wheelset and Ritchie finishing kit for £805.92.

Smashes the Planet X out the park IMO.

Have you considered the Btwin Alur 700, it has been reduced to £599 which I think is incredible value for what you get. Availability seems to be good too (my local Decathlon has loads in).

I am in your exact position in terms of looking for my first bike and have reserved a Medium bike while I am waiting for my Cycle2work scheme to come through.

The BTWIN looks like great value, but I'm unable to find any proper information on geometry.

I'm sure the Btwin website has some more detailed information. Best bet is to go down to a Decathlon and have a sit on one to be honest.

Last time I tried the BTwin site for geo info for someone there was absolutely zilch but good luck trying.

I've not found any frame geometry charts on the BTwin website either, which is poor if you are trying to compare their bikes to a rival brand. All they show is bike size and person height and inside leg measurement, may be a ploy to get you to go into one of their stores for some sales person persuasion.

To be fair from what I have experienced with Decathlon the staff aren't like sales people but are thee to offer any advice they can (not always correct though!) and then leave you to it to make a decision.

Being a beginner I'm not really interested in the details of Geometry, I've just had to go on what I think feels right and read pretty much everything there is on the internet about the bike.
