It's amusing that everyone bangs on about the (second) Gulf war as if pointless conflict which was politically inspired is a new idea.

The right wing idol that was Thatcher took us to war with Argentina over some islands that most people had never heard of, and certainly didn't give a toss about.

Mind you, we won and she won the subsequent election, so that's OK, isn't it?

I just smile every time anyone comes out with that old "it's the left's fault" argument. No wonder the Daily Heil etc sell so well.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

The Falklands are British territory, with a population that wants it to stay that way.
The Middle East, not so much.

    Quite a difference.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    £25mill isn't expensive.

It just isn't. If you think it is, you don't have a concept of how much stuff like this costs.

Agree that it's a bit rich to blame the left for that war - whether Blair is/was a "lefty" I didn't see many on the right opposing it. What I find hard to understand is how an enquiry can cost £31million!

I would quite like to see the breakdown of costs so we whose snouts were in the trough and to what extent - just how much have some people made out of this enquiry.

I think it was quite correct to politicise this topic.
Public Interest Lawyers - Head Solicitor = Phil Shiner, who is honorary vice president of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers. Plus he has a history of fighting Human Rights Cases in the European Courts.
Leigh Day & Co - Whilst no socialist background, they have built their business fighting human rights claims against the UK government and UK corporations on behalf of foreigners. They particularly crow about the number of claims they have successfully made against the MoD on behalf of Iraqis. And quite blatantly claim on their website that UK soldiers tortured their clients.

I know Phil Shiner, not only as a lawyer but as a neighbour. Ten years ago we lived two doors away from each other in red brick terraces in Birmingham. He's not money motivated and is a fearsomely principled socialist (although he did have 105 on his bike which at the time I thought was quite bourgeouis)
