Have a plan to cycle around Skye during May next year, any information gratefully recieved, local knowledge? Road conditions look fair on streetview, places to eat/drink? would be taking a campervan for sleeping, anything to be aware of? places to see/miss? - cheers

Issue 23 of Cyclist (July 2014) featured Skye on the UK ride.

    Beautiful part of the world.

  • If you want an experience there's a further coastguard lookout in the far north at Durnish. It's a bothy now. You could stash your bikes somewhere out of sight then walk about mile and a bit to it where it overlooks the Durnish peninsula below the cliff which the bothy sits. Amazing views out, great for whale watching and you get the odd sea eagle passing by apparently. Need sleeping bag, mat and cooking kit.

  • Just watch the cliff there. There's a way down to the lower level of the peninsula with a path running just below the cliff. We saw a few blocks of fall from the cliff and roll across the beach to rest 20 metres into the sea. They were old mini sized up to minibus sized! A group had passed that point 5 minutes earlier too.
  • Plenty of good places to park up for the night. We wildcamped by the road to Elgol IIRC for a couple of nights whilst exploring the area on foot.

The little village on the mainland to the south of the road towards the bridge has good stop off points too plus Brock or two in good Nick. The village hall lets you use their showers and get fresh water too IIRC. Pitch on the bit towards the old ferry then back a bit too use the showers and pub there.

sounds good, last time I was at Skye was before the bridge was built and we wild camped in a howling gale opposite a pub, just trying to find it on google earth and doesn't seem to be in the place i thought it was. Question are midges a problem usually in May?
