I am 53 and I have been road riding for 2 years now on a 2012 Defy 1 composite and am looking at changing to either a Defy Advanced 1 which has TRP Spyre mechanical discs brakes and also the Defy Adanvaced Pro 1 which is about £1000 more which has the Shimano Hydraulic discs brakes fitted as well as a lot of upgrades over the TRP braked bike. Shop saying if you can go for the Pro bike. I mainly do club rides and Sportives and wondered if the extra money is worth spending.

In the latest issue of Bikes ETC magazine they reviewed the Defy Advanced Pro 0, same frame and wheels as the Pro 1 and the Defy Advanced 3.

IIRC they said the Shimano hydraulic brakes on the Advanced Pro were very good, whereas the TRP Spyre were adequate but lacked feel. Suggest you have a read of the two articles. Whether you can justify the extra £1000 only you can make that decision. If I were spending that amount I'd want to be test riding them both.

I've no experience of disc braked bikes, but those who do should be along to give you the pros and cons of each system, TRP also make a cable operated hydraulic disc brake caliper, which is supposed to be very good, so you could consider the Advanced 1 and upgrade to those if the mounts/hubs/rotors are compatible on the Giant frame, fork and wheels. That is something you would need to check with the bike shop to see if it is viable, mechanically and economically, maybe not be possible or cost effective.
