It never works out too good. Better off just getting new rims.

To do it properly you need to take the wheel apart, trust that is your intention, if not you will never get it decent.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • I wasn't intending in taking the whole wheel apart.

Was just going to remove the tyre etc and mask off the spokes
  • I wouldn't bother then. It'll be and look shite.

In my BMX days people used to do this all the time and it always looks a bit ghetto. Even if careful with the masking you could always tell it was a DIY effort.

For a good finish you would need to sand down the existing paint, prime it, and then apply a few thin layers of paint allowing appropriate drying time between each layer. Finally you would then need to apply a couple of layers clear coat. Harder to do with spokes in the way, but the results are worth it.

...or buy new rims in the colour you want :)

Hard to believe they look worse now than they will after you do that I'm afraid.

even with the rim unbuilt if it has eyelets you are on a hiding to nothing.

eyeletless rims OK but still a pain.

Very true, although keeping the spray very thin and building it up in layers can stop it welling up so much, if at all.

Too many pages and broken images in that post! ;)
