Cable outers ~ ferrules, yes or no?

Ok, so I'm doing my first ever bike build, and I had thought I had read that for modern compression outers, that you don't use ferrules on the outers where they interface with things, i.e. frame, calipers, sti levers.

Now I've looked at my best bike (doh! should have done this first! :D ), and it looks to have;

1. ferrules at the ends of all the cables for the gears where it interfaces with the frame, including where it interfaces with barrel adjusters on said frame.
2. not at the end of brake outers, where it interfaces with barrel adjusters.
3. I can't see what is happening at the lever end as it's ultegra and thus all covered up.

So.....

Help! I've ordered some to pick up tomorrow just in case (they are cheap enough, I've ordered 4 and 5 mm ones), but where do I need to use them? Unlike my bestest bike, my new build uses 2008 105 levers, so it has under bar tape brake, and not hidden gear, cables.

Many thanks.

  • As you describe on your current bike everywhere except bake cables entering calipers on mine as they won't fit there. And yes ferrules where they exit the hoods as well, well at least on SRAM where there are slots for them on the STI.

    Ok, thanks ~ that answers my question. I'll pick up the ferrules tomorrow, and if they fit at a cable interface, then I will assume they should be there. I reckon that’s my best bet.

    I so wish I hadn't just chucked away the (very worn) cable outers from the donor bike, that would have given me an indication , at least, but in the absence of them, your input is muchly appreciated.

    Cheers!
  • PS 4mm is gear outer 5mm is brake. I have ferrules everywhere except where brake cable enters the brake calipers, don't know why though as the cable ends get pretty scanky there as they age.

    PPS Biggest tip anyone could give is invest in good cable cutters makes all the difference in this job.
