edited December 2014 in Commuting chat
Had my plaster cast removed yesterday after 4 weeks in plaster.
The other half asked me if i was then cycling to work today as she needs me home sooner than getting the bus to help get the kids.
no one wishes as much as me that i would have full use of my left thumb immediately but the physio reckons 3-4 weeks more work and then maybe i can commute again.
the other half thought it'd be a quick fix.

at least she knows even if i take the long route home cycling its still about 30 minutes quicker than the bus :-)

Personally, I would make the effort and give it to her.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • It's a thumb, what's the problem...? Use Shimano STIs and you don't need it

  • A broken thumb?

Well yes I suppose it could hamper your ability to ride a bike... maybe

When I broke my finger I didn't ride again until I could pull the brakes properly. Oh, and I may have used it as an excuse to buy a bike with discs.

MacLeod, are you going straight from the plaster cast to nothing or do you still have some kind of plastic brace? I was in plaster for 2 weeks after my avulsion fracture/UCL tear and subsequent surgery, currently cooling my heels in a plastic brace which I apparently need to wear for another couple of months. I need to make some modifications to it to cycle though, because as set up, I can't really grip bullhorns and the hoods are a total no-go.

my thumb is now naked and much in love with bathing without the need for a couple of carrier bags covering the plaster.
i am doing hourly physio pulling and pushing it all over the place to regain movement and its coming along well but i still need codeine (pussy) to mask the discomfort this is causing. i will be back on the turbo this weekend and may break out the rollers early next week and maybe at the end of next week get out into the fresh air.
i have tried gripping the hoods and putting a bit of pressure on isnt very nice at the mo. no need to rush and make things worse.
