Just wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction to find a cheap wheel for my turbo trainer? I've bought a 8 speed sora cassette now just need a wheel anything under £25 preferably? 700c

Isit difficult to fix the set to the wheel i have tried ebay but all seem to be local pick up.

  • Most people use a knackered rear wheel that they've worn the rim out on turbos rather than buy a wheel specially for it.
You will be very hard pressed to find a wheel that cheaply, the cheapest wheels I know of are the Shimano R500 wheels (which are pretty good as training/ general use wheels) and are around £50 per wheel or £75 pair.

Other than that just waiting on the ebay front or asking any local club members if they have a knackered wheel you can buy/ have would be your best bet.

Not quite sure what that bit meant as I assume you mean "Is it easy to install the cassette" then the answer is "yes, but you will need some tools for the job". I cannot see where the local pickup comes into it!

Anyway, tools for cassette changing are pretty much an essential part of cycling so it is worth buying them now if you haven't got them already. You will need a chain whip and a lockring adjuster/spanner or cassette removal tool. Very easy to do (GCN do a good guide on Youtube, etc.) and should only take 2-3 minutes. Don't be afraid to use quite a bit of torque when tightening (but don't go mad).

As for the wheels, I agree that R500 are a good bet secondhand off ebay, etc. Only ~£50 new so don't pay more than £30 secondhand.
  • Or have a look on the Classifieds on this forum......

When do you know that the rim as worn out? Perhaps i should just buy a new set of wheels for my bike at the minute there just the bog standard btwin wheels isit worth upgrading rather then forking out for a new single rear wheel?

Yepp, as per Ugo's article 1mm is the general rule of thumb but some manufacturers make things a little easier to determine. For instance, some Mavic wheels have a wear track (as in a line indented around the rim) whilst some Shimano wheels have a wear dot...but these are only a guide as wear can be uneven across the surface.
