Replacing cable for rear Shimano Mech

Hello,

Sorry if this is asking the obvious.

Bike = Specialised Rockhopper 2007

I have a Shimano Deore LX rear mech with SL-M511 shifters and want to replace the cable.

Can I purchase ANY Shimano Gear Cable Set? Are they a universal kit regardless of shifters and mech?

Is it worth getting PTFE coated?

One last question would there be any benefit to changing my derailleurs and shifters to something a bit more modern? I guess in doing so would give me something lighter, although that's not an issue for me. But are modern components any easier to maintain and adjust?

Apart from changing the standard Avid Juicy brakes for Shimano XT's everything else on the bike is what it came with. Just thinking a little face lift will extend it's life and reliability.

Thanks in advance.
PJ

    Any gear cable will work - make sure it's stainless, and replace the outer at the same time. Shimano SP41 is excellent and cheap by the metre from CRC. Can't comment on PTFE as I don't see the need.

    If the mech and shifters work I'd just leave them.

    I use PTFE coated cables as mine are routed below the BB so it's to stop muck accumulating there and nothing to do with it moving through the outer that I use it.
