Racing the wife & kids in the car down from the top of the Great Orme to the tram station at the bottom. 3 minutes of stupidity, huge fun.

We were on hols near there and my youngest decided that he was going to try that run, and nothing we could say would dissuade him. The bit that frightened me (for his sake) was, how was he going to stop at the bottom? If you've done it, that's not as silly as it sounds, because you know the amount of run off you get down there, virtually zero, as you are then in the middle of the busy bit of town with junctions and people and still on a slope.

I always thought it was very lucky that he had a blow out within about 200m of the start, even if that did put him into the grass on his aris. The nice man at Halfords fitted a new tube for him and told him of a much nicer ride around the Orme.

I started cycling a little while after that. One of my favourite evenings was a ride around Donington Park race circuit, when it was a lovely summer and the wind was blowing just nicely down the hill into Craner Curves and the Old Hairpin. I was there with both my sons and have a pic of the three of us riding the finishing straight.

Another day was a sportive in which the three of us took part, happy memories.

The older I get, the better I was.

Probably the last day of my Exeter to Die week-long trip. I'd done the ride to avoid another rubbish English August, and with temperatures in the mid-30s, unbroken sunshine, a tailwind, decent fitness, a nice bit of climbing, and a long-awaited tailwind for the last leg, it now feels like a dream. In fact I started the day thinking that I might take it easy and split this into two days, and said to myself that I'd only carry on if I reached Valence by 5pm. I reached Valence by 5pm. • On holiday in Ivybridge, Devon this year and the family were getting up later and later each day. I buggered off on my bike (not really knowing where I was going) and really enjoyed the peace, scenery, coffee and freedom.
My other half phoned me to find out where the hell I was and if I'd be coming back soon as they were all waiting for me! Turned out I'd been gone three hours already, three and a half when I got back. Loved it. :D
Still thinking of something clever to say!

A circuit of the island of Cumbrae near Glasgow when I was a kid - it's only about 11 miles, but seemed like a great achievement at the time - I'd ridden around an entire island!

A ride from the South Wales valleys to Brecon and back when I was a teenager, on my first (Peugeot) road bike. We'd planned to stay at the Brecon YHA, but decided to make it a one day round trip and started back the same afternoon. The return was a serious slog, and we must have done about 70 miles of very hilly roads by the time we got home, probably triple what I'd done in a day before. Absolutely exhausted the next day.

From San Francisco to Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge a few years ago on a hired tourist hybrid. It's a spectacular ride I'd like to do on a better bike next time. Got a bit close to a puma, which luckily decided not to pounce and bite anyone in the neck. Took the evening ferry back to the City from Sausalito - a cold beer on the boat was an ideal way to round off the day.

I did Preston to Ambleside two years after I started cycling. I'd actually done it the previous year and, overestimating my abilities, died on my ar*e - the final five miles were torture and remains my worst memory on a bike. It made me so ill I spent two days of our Lakes holiday feeling like sh*te.

This time I was determined to do it properly and had far better form (and a far better understanding of on-the-bike nutrition). I set off quite early on a Saturday morning and it was one of the first rides I'd done where everything fell into place. My legs felt strong, my heart and lungs too, the wind was non-existent or behind me and before I knew it I was cruising down the Winster Valley in glorious sunshine and just knowing that I would make it. And the missus was waiting at the holiday cottage with a fridge full of beer. Felt so good I cycled back again week later.

In retrospect it was only about 55 miles but it was the first time I thought 'I really, really like this cycling lark!'

Our pub wobbles are always good, standard route is 11 miles with 5 pubs. Outbound is along the tow path from Kingston to Richmond with a refreshment stop at either end and a break by Teddington Lock part way along. Then up Richmond Hill for a pint at the top. Then back through Richmond Park trying to avoid suicidal deer for a pint in the local.

I know that route (roughly) having spent some time in Hampton Hill.

What's the name of the pub as you come out of Hampton Court and turn left? to where the square shaped green is?

Cardinal Wolsey, it has been struggling for years, the Landlord was arrested recently over a murder I kid you not!

The White Buck! haha. Isn't that usually around Burley village somewhere?

Yup. Not a proper pub, Fullers owned drinkery cum expensive pub food. Now turned itself into a 'Boutique Hotel'. So appropriate for the New Forest.....NOT!
