I am looking to buy a pair of extreme weather unpadded bib tights for when it goes into minus figures. I want them to be reasonable in price (£50-£60 tops), as they are for the commute. I currently have some Gore Oxygen SO padded bib tights which are great to -5c but only use for longer rides, and also have a pair of unpadded Lusso Max Repel which are OK to 0c and are what I use for commuting. I am looking for something as warm as the gores or warmer but unpadded.

    DHB.

For dry and cold conditions, their tights are hard to beat. Bit of bobbling on the arse of them, which you don't tend to get on fancier brands, but warm and well made.

You must run warmer than I do.

I had some DHB Vaeon Roubaix (padded) and they were good but weren't a patch of my Gore's. May be the Zero's are better but they don't come unpadded unfortunately.

Got the Max Repel, great bib tights but not warm enough for me. May be I should just wear knee warmers underneath! :)

Wow - I find them too hot unless it's somewhere between -5 and +5 degrees C!
More layers might actually be the answer though - I got some cycling base layer compression tights from Aldi the other day for a tenner - seem OK.

  • I'm with Marcus, dhb roubaix unpadded, good for me down to -5 on my commute (10 miles each way). Had them for about 3 years, look new (& I use them daily throughout the winter).

Sigh, seems that you guys are recommending me stuff I have already used or stuff that I own, which is good.

To be fair, nothing beats the Gore's as they are completely windproof thanks to the windstopper material but on still days the Max Repels are good enough. It is just sometimes it is wet, windy and in minus figures and I find myself a bit exposed. I will try layering.

Have you tried castelli nanoflex with matching leg warmers?

I use Vaeon Roubaix (unpadded) and Vaeon Zero (padded) and the Zero's are much better than the Roubaix around and below zero, down to minus 5 or so they're certainly fine.

Like you I was looking for a subzero pair of unpadded biblongs to go over padded shorts but outside of Assos (I have a couple of pairs of Assos shorts but can't afford a matching winter wardrobe sadly) the only suitable ones I came across were the DHB Vaeon Zero. They've had a lot of wear and are holding up very well indeed. I wear a pair of cheap very thinly padded shorts (eg Tenn, Aldi etc) underneath them to give the old knackers some added insulation. You can get Triathlon shorts which are similarly unpadded or thinly padded.

I know it's a bit wasteful, but you (or someone else) could unstitch the insert, if you're that keen on the Zero's.

if it is seriously cold I go for the legwarmers under roubaix big tights, no pad so shorts under too. Toasty warm and means I don't have to cram yet another cycling garment into an already overflowing drawer!
