Can someone please explain what I need to do so that a route I create has elevation profile data as well.
I am happy to use any route building software. It's for loading onto my Garmin 800.
Is it something to do with file types?

Routes created on the ridewithgps website and subsequently exported as gpx tracks contain elevation date.

Here is one imported into base camp to show elevation data graphically.
Here is some of the raw data.
