.... To get out and take advantage of mega quiet roads?

Dunno about round your way but North Manchester this past couple of months has been utter shite with traffic, even the quiet roads are busy or have roadworks.

  • Yes but only because I spend much of my time being a taxi driver.

Was thinking this today, specially if there's a brand new bike under the tree.

I will go out early for a quick spin, then shower and a huge breakfast before consuming my bodyweight in wine and food.

On the other hand, poor weather on Christmas Day, can also be a good excuse to not visit some of those awkward relatives.

  • Christmas Day is Parkrun morning, hopefully in the snow :-) May cycle down on the MTB

No cycling Christmas day...my wife has to put up with me riding 6 days a week all year...I think if I said I was going out for a couple of hours Christmas morning she'd be pretty pissed...and rightly so!

Won't make any difference to me! I won't see daylight - I'll be cooped up in a windowless custody suite from 6.30am to 7pm. :/

That's what happens when you turn whistleblower against politicians, top brass give you crappy shifts.

  • I've witnessed particularly poor driving from people on Christmas days in the past. Whether its complacency because people assume the roads are quiet, hungover from the night before or just generally a poor standard of driving.

I always go for a ride on Christmas morning. I have noticed a change in the traffic levels over the years. 25 years ago there was hardly any traffic, now it's like a Sunday was 25 years ago.
  • I normally ride on Christmas day and new years day, but been banged up from a crash with a taxi, recovery long and painful. No ride this year. As for the missus. She has to work Christmas day anyhow so she normally dont miss me. Be a pest this year more likely I will.

I'm expecting temperatures of around 27 degrees C. Chance of some light rains. Should be alright. Only have around 50km to go on Christmas day.
  • Nope, locally I hope it puts down about a foot of snow for a white christmas. At the airport however I expect clear runways and no delays.

    On double time!?
I'm the same profession ( I think? ) and I've got New Years eve off for the first time in years!
  • Well it'll be my first Xmas morning ride as it goes ....

Early in the Vale of Belvoir and then off to eat the big bird :D
Still thinking of something clever to say!

In 18 years I've had NYE off 3 times, but been on a day shift the next day when I haven't been on a night. This year I'm on the day shift NYD. The worst custody shift of the year. As it was last time. Horrific.

I'd rather be off, I've only seen my 8yo do her presents twice and not seen my 4yo do it yet.

Won't be going for a spin on Xmas. I ride enough and do plenty of other exercise all year round and roads in Scotland I ride are quiet all the time. I'll be glad just to put my feet up for a change.

    Merry Xmas to all

  • I've been out for the last couple of years now. Prep everything for dinner the night before so I don't burden anyone else with the chores, and get out mid morning. I ride for a couple of hours, the roads are quiet, and the people you meet are pleasant.

I too get out a lot during the rest of the year, but I don't get out to exercise on Xmas day, I go out because it clears the mind, and provides a welcome distraction from other issues in my my life.

Unless the weather is atrocious, I'll be out again this year too.

I will be spending the day with the wife/kids/family.

I dont think in years to come that i will regret not riding my bike more often over watching the kids open their prezzies.
My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...

I usually try and get out for a couple of hours (after the pressie thing is done) if the weather is good. No suffering though and a nice flat easy route. I find it good to clear my head...and get an appetite for the rest of the day :)

Hopefully I will be wearing some new socks this year as it is my fiftieth on the day so I am keeping my fingers crossed for something natty!
  • Got 15 days off over Xmas/New Year, plan to ride (or turbo if weather too bad) every day - except 25 Dec. Wife said I could if I wanted but I wasn't about to fall for that old chestnut!! Hoping for rain on Boxing Day so I can use my new Castelli overboots that I may or may not be getting from Santa ( I should be, left nothing chance. Got them put by at LBS at told them to expect my Dad in the next 24 hours). I hate surprises.
  • Christmas day 2013, I went out for a 35 mile spin. Blue skies, no wind, deserted roads - it really was beautiful.
If you get the chance and nice weather, go for a ride - that Christmas dinner can be your recovery meal!
  • My first Christmas home in 4 years. I might go for a spin but I'm also hoping for a white Christmas.

Not so much Christmas Day but the Sundays around it!
Doing the LBL sportive in April and due to work I only have 9 Sundays for longer miles!!
Hoping for a mild winter.....today is grim so that's one Sunday scratched off!

NapD/The Rover....thanks to our leave ban while hosting the Commonwealth Games, I'm now annual leave.
First shift back is night shift on NYE.
I feel your pain..it's different when kids come along!
