My employer has just launched a cycle to work scheme with Halfords with a maximum of £500. I understand Halfords will supply bikes not from their range - any ideas on what to go for as a decent commuter?

Unless you have something specific in mind, why not just get a Boardman hybrid from Halfords? You can use pretty much any bike as a commuter but I would recommend something that takes full mudguards. Hybrids are good as it do it all machines and flat handlebars mean that you are more upright in traffic which can be handy. If you are not sure then the Boardman hybrids are a good choice. Plus its easy to try & buy from your local store.
