Hi,

Looking to buy some shoes for my CX bike, currently riding it with slicks on road with road shoes but going to start taking it off road so need suitable shoes.

Are these ideal for cyclocross and general off road riding?

Also what size would i need? I'm usually a 9 in most shoes, sometimes an 8.5 and in my Specialized road shoes I'm a 44.

Cheers

I've got a pair of these. They are fine for off road riding, and okay, but not ideal for cyclocross.

For racing cross something like the XC50N is more suitable as they can fit toe studs and the uppers are more weather proof.

The sizing is a bit small, like most Shimano shoes, although these are quite wide too. I am usually a size 9/9.5. I have size 45 Shimano shoes.
  • Yeah, I use the XC50N for commuting. Really nice shoes. Should be great for cross.

Only reason I don't use them is I have some trashed (i.e dirty) Giro Gauge which are just fine for cross.

If I was buying for cross now the XC50N would be a good choice. Really good weatherproofing.

  • I have the XC 30, nice shoes for the money. Like all Shimano they do fit small, I normally am a 42-43, but had to get a size 44 for these... so buy one size up at least

  • Is the sole of the xc30 pretty stiff?

Stiff enough... not as as stiff as a carbon fibre sole, but stiff enough

  • Absolutely. Unless they're many times more noodly than the XC50 then they will be plenty stiff enough. And, for cross, probably the optimum stiffness.

  • I've got the XC30 as my MTB shoe - they're great as a budget option, but if you're going to be doing CX races, and pushing / carrying your bike through mud regularly, you'd be better off with a shoe that has front studs.
