As I'm not wanting to spend £50 on a mat, what else are people using.

Currently looking at rubber safety matting at around £30, there maybe even some at work I can 'loan'

Planet X have some SportCrafters mats at £39.99.
  • Bit of cut-off carpet or rug (for deadening) with a £5 yoga mat (wipeable) on top. Both roll away when not in use.
Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.
  • Picked up a yoga mat from local Tesco for not much and does pretty good job

  • As I turbo outside in my shed I don't really have to worry but one thing I would say (from when I used the turbo indoors) was to look out for lubricant coming off the chain and hitting the wall or in my case fridge behind when you're training. In fairness I hadn't been cycling long then and probably put too much on the chain, allied to the hotter temps indoors it did cause a few splats. Something to think about.

    Ditto
Yoga mat for me too. I know I only paid about €5 but can't remember where - probably either Tescos or a general sports shop. If you have it permanently on a laminate floor or something it may be worth checking from time to time that it's not getting stuck to it or transferring colour, just in case. However, I've never had any such problem and I doubt it would be an issue.

Yoga mat, £5.99, sports direct. Does the job. Also came with some nice pictures of someone called Gemma Atkinson :)

Carpet offcut for me too. Cost nothing. Does the same job as a 'turbo mat' (hahaha). Ditto the advice above re: crap spinning out the back - I set mine up inside when I first got it then after my first session I looked back in horror at the jank sprayed uo my lovely (up until then) white wall....

Do these mats do anything for silencing? or is it just for vibration?

Won't do anything for noise coming from the wheel/roller interface. However if you use the trainer on a floor that amplifies any transmitted vibration (wood floor typically) then the mat should reduce this.
