Not surely if this is in the right place but just a warning to others.

I supposedly won this bike on ebay a few weeks ago and discovered fairly quickly it was a scam, particularly when the seller contacted me to say he didn't have a paypal account and wanted me to do a bank transfer despite the fact i had already sent the money via paypal! I am still fighting with paypal to get my money back but have to go through their lengthy process despite the fact I have notified them on 4 occasions now when the advert has appeared on a different user name but same email address in the advert. Amazingly each ad disappears very quickly but they still wont do a refund of my money

In summary if you see anything from pjlory1959@gmail.com walk away and let ebay or whoever know

Surely the price must have rung alarm bells before you even sent the money????

Something of that value I'd always insist on a telephone number and cash on collection. I'd never trust a courier with it.

    Good lesson for us all.

That and the fact someone is selling a £6k+ bike with just bits of the spec copied and pasted, and not a single word of their own on the ad.

Not really. It was a bit of an impulse buy as I was really only interested in the Di2 groupset and a friend of mine has picked up 3 similar level bikes over the past year for not much more. I was more focused on getting the bike that week to allow me to strip the groupset and swap to mine over the weekend while i had some free time. At the time I was slightly concerned about the picture showing the email address and hence why I opted for going through paypal (not appreciating it would take quite as long to get my money back via paypal)

Cash on collection woudn't have been an option as it was too far to travel and would have taken pretty much a whole day and about £100 of fuel. Plus if you find there is a problem later (cracked frame, stolen etc) you can generally get your money back via payal. If its cash you are stuffed

Its easy to criticise in hindsight but its the first scam I have ever fallen for in my 13 years on ebay (or any forum)

I have bought plenty of things over the years (cars, bikes, motorbikes, watches etc) with similar or less descriptions and never had a problem so that's certainly not a sure fire signal that something is wrong.

Again all this was done in the space of about half an hour from me seeing it for sale to winning the bid so wasn't much time to research or analyse it all. If i had the time to email him before i would probably have realised it was a scam by the way the responses were written and lack of knowledge about the bike etc.

It was basically a punt that didn't work out but i'm not looking for any sympathy, or criticism. Just highlighting it to others so they don't get caught. On the basis this has apparently been bought 5 or 6 times already clearly a lot of people have got into a bidding frenzy like me assuming it to be legitimate.

No surprise that the advert above has now been pulled and yet ebay still won't recognise that my situation is a scam until Saturday this week when the sellers 7 days to respond have expired.

Put an email-me search on eBay for 'Scott Foil Premium' and every time he relists it just tell them it's the scam and they'll pull it.

I guess he'll just move on to another bike then...

I would always ask the seller a question often scammers no nothing about the articles they are selling.
  • Hope you get sorted with PayPal.

If you fancy a genuine one...

  • I saw that advert on 25/11/14 and sent him an email requesting more details. The reply was so vague that I did not trust his integrity and was not happy to pursue it any further. Anybody with a bike of that spec should have known a lot more about it than he appeared to. I wasn't happy that it was a 24hr auction either. He was also keen to do a deal outside of ebay which would give you no protection in the event of something going wrong.
Unfortunately I have deleted his reply otherwise I would have copied it onto this thread as it may have helped.
  • Not sure how long the listing was on that I supposedly won but there was only a few hours left to run so was a bit spur of the moment. But like yourself it became very obvious afterwards when he contacted me (actually through ebay) to say he had no paypal account and could I transfer the money to his account. Still have a few of his emails but not worth adding here as it was after the event. He was clearly from overseas with limited English which didn't seem to match his email which suggested an English man born in 1959. Hadn't noticed before how many people use their year of birth in their email or username!

Still waiting on the refund but after this mornings farce that is the ebay chat service the case has now apparently been closed in my favour so should get the refund in 24-48 hrs

Glad it looks like being resolved and thanks for informing us. Will make me think harder before bidding on eBay.

    Or so i thought!

Got an email from ebay this morning saying they were reviewing the case but needed more time

Went through the whole on line chat thing this morning but would have got more sense talking to my cat. They just kept saying please can we have more time. No you f****ing can't!

Eventually rang customer support centre in some far off country and after being referred to ever higher departments i finally got through to the "rapid response escalation team" or whatever they call themselves. They took a complete u turn and decided again that the case had been found in my favour! BUT. Apparently the refund is only issued in 24-48 hours if it us under £500. In her words "because it is such a large amount" (no kidding!) it has to be referred to a higher department for authorisation and they cant put a timescale on it! After more shouting she put an approximate time scale of "MAYBE 10-15 days". And no surprise to find this this "really high" department are totally un-contactable!!! I am fuming. Having followed all there rules and played their game i now don't know whether the case has or hasn't been resolved and either way will i see a refund in 2014 (or 2015 for that matter).

Ebay/paypal are great for letting you know what their rules are and that you have to follow them (despite it being blatantly obvious since 17th Nov it was a scam) yet seem to be able to change the rules as and when it suits them

Not sure where to go next. My gut reaction is that the fraudster has taken the money from the paypal account making it difficult for them to recover it so they are now using a stalling tactic until they do. So much for the safety of paypal
  • I have been highly suspicious of Ebay and Paypal ever since I claimed for a £5 phone cover that never appeared.

I never got a penny from them.

For the huge commission they both take, you would think they'd employ a big team of customer service people, but no, their CS sucks.

I now avoid them like the plague and use forums like this to buy and sell, that charge no fee and offer no protection - it's old school and if you're careful it works.

As usual it's the 1% scum that spoil it for everybody.

I totally agree although I've found that things sell on eBay fairly quickly. Think I'll close both accounts once this is resolved.

Been to the bank this morning. Think they can help but sounds a slow process. At least I will have someone who I can talk to that can keep me updated

Asking for your ebay user ID so he can hack it and steal your password to fake sell his Scott?

I did that and found all kinds of things from motorbikes, to printing machines, to keyboards, to burger vans to sewing machines! Some of those were probably from the email account before he hacked that as well.
  • Success at last. Ebay have finally woken up and realised it was a scam so the case has finally been resolved in my favour along with a very apologetic email. Money should be back in my bank tomorrow.

This has certainly highlighed a number of things to me that will change the way I buy or sell anything in the future!

The Ebay model is just too prone to abuse.
Only recently I sold an item and had it delivered via Collect+ which is integrated into Ebay. The item was delivered but 'not received' if you get my meaning.
I had to refund the money and got the Collect+ compensation which didnt fully cover the selling price.
Of course, the item has been abducted by aliens.
I only used Collect+ because even tho tracked, it didnt require signing.. my fault for not reading the small print.
I have been victim to alien abductions several times now.
Ebay/Paypal will always find in favour of the so called 'innocent party'.
