Garmin Edge users - why is the VP so shonky?

I did a regular ride of mine Tuesday (24 miles circuit) and recorded the ride on my 500. I uploaded this to Strava then copied the .gpx file to ridewithgps and then exported to .tcx to save to my 500 (as is well known the 500 will not convert a .gpx file to a course). All good.
Rode the same course today against the VP, all was fine until I stopped for a few minutes about 11 miles in. The Edge auto-paused (I have it set to do this at 2.5 mph) and I did not move for that time paused. I was about 3 secs ahead of the VP at this time.
As soon as I set off and glanced down (having auto-resumed) it is showing me 4 1/2 mins and 0.6 mile ahead??
Why is this? Surely when I stop the VP should stop?

The VP did stop though didn't it? I would have assumed it would carry on.
Maybe it saw you stop and assumed you had dropped a virtual bottle and went back to get it for you.
Either that or it saw you had bonked and went back half a mile to give you a head start when you resumed.
I think it is programmed not to wait with you in case you start talking to it.0 -
Maybe the vp stopped at a cake shop for a megabyte to eat ?"The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0
