Marin Northside Trail BB & Headset

So i've got hold of a Marin frame and im planning on doing it up as bit of a project.
This is the frame: http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/Bike ... &Type=bike
It came with nothing but the headset and bottom bracket, but they need replacing, at the moment it has a 1 1/8 Threadless Headset and a TruVativ Power Spline Bottom Bracket (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/truv ... -prod21496).
Now as far as i know, the bottom bracket can be replaced with whatever a new crankset needs (Probably HT2) aslong as the widths and diameter match?
But the headset is where im struggling, does it have to be a Threadless headset or can it be a different standard?

Most common type available, and all modern forks are threadless.

That is a really good one at a bargain price. But any standard 1 and 1/8th (not zero stack/integrated/semi integrated etc) will work.
They are all threadless - that just means the forks don't thread into the headset.
