Thought I might get some tape on the mudguards etc - anyone use it? Any brand/roll recommendations?

  • Search eBay for SOLAS. Its the stuff they use on tankers, really sticky and very reflective.

    Edit: this stuff.

I've used stuff like UndercoverElephant provided in his link. Still working on my bike after several years commuting, although I think on bits some the protective top layer has come off, and in others it has become a little grotty around the corners. Still does a very good job though.

There are also options like black tape if you like

3M diamond reflective tape is great, I have a strip down the rear of my seatpost.

You 'should' only have red to the rear and white to the front and yellow to the sides (and pedals on a bike which can face either way obviously).
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I have some of this 3M tape on my seat post and running down my rear mudguard. I think it's pretty good and invisible at a casual glance in the day unless you're looking for it, so it doesn't ruin the bike.

Really? The colour restrictions??? Does that apply to reflectives on clothing too?

I'll be putting some Pogu reflective pressure stickers on my bike. They use 3M reflectives that are matt black until the light shines on them then they go white. I intent to place them all over my bike at prominent places. Mostly they are dots, short strips, oblongs and triangular in shape not tape so really just highlight spots not like a coloured tape up the mudguards.

I use the 3M Diamond stuff in blue. It's very sticky, very reflective and I've never had any grief over the colour. Reasonably priced on eBay too. I don't have any on the bike though, just a few discreet precision cut outs on my helmet and in key places on my backpack.

  • The best thing about the SOLAS stuff is that it's completely flexible too, I've had it stuck to backpacks and the like and it's survived all weathers and even trips through the washing machine. The 3M diamond stuff was (from memory) quite stiff, and had a tendency to come off when applied to curved surfaces.

Tell a lie, this is the stuff I bought...

Not actually 3M as I thought.

Sticks well to my backpack, which obviously flexes and moves and is used in all weathers.

Hasn't come off my seatpost and that is just a 1" wide strip down the rear of it (27.2mm) so quite a lot of bend.
