Mavic Aksium

Hi folks I know the answers here are going to be pretty subjective but I've been running a set of aksiums all year since January and have done coming up to 4500 miles on them. It seems though that the rear rim is really worn and needs replacing, now I know it's only a cheap wheelset but am I wrong to think they should last more than 4-5000 miles on them.

All depends on where you ride them, how you look after them, etc etc: if you clean the rims/pads after every ride (30 second hose down will do this) together with a good clean at the weekends, then you'll get far more mileage. I used Aksiums as commuter wheels for years doing this with no problems. I've used Kyserium Elites as winter/commuter/race wheels for years and still no major wear issues - but there are done, but nothing I wouldn't expect/grumble about.
If they are covered in that horrible crack that grinds everything to bits and never cleaned then no, limited mileage only.
It's all subjective, innit?Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

I got my Mavic Aksiums with a Bianchi I bought 3/4 years ago and they are still running fine after about 7k miles. for the last two years they have been on my winter bike with all the grunge that implies. Only problem I had was that the spokes rusted but after a rub down and repaint with inhibitor and hammerite they have been fine.0

I had a pair of of Aksium about 10 years ago and the rear did about 6,000 miles, so you are not far offleft the forum March 20230

~5,000 as a rough guide seems fine to me if ridden in all weathers. I used a pair for winter rides and had similar until the freehub died and the rim wear made it a useful nudge to get some more winter wheels. Went for a £100 set of RS30s but wish I had spent extra on something like the Aksium as the RS30s feel lifeless in comparison. Ho hum.0

Cheers guys I guess 4-5000 miles isn't too bad on a cheap wheelset then. Will have to hunt for a cheap set for my winter hack now.0

Over 11,500 miles on mine and they are still fine, although now used on my second bike. Only issue I've had is that a couple of the bladed spokes turned through 90 degrees but that was easily fixed. They've run true since new.0

About 16,000km on mine in the last 2 years and they are running fine.Strava Profile: http://app.strava.com/athletes/20060660

The best advice for wheel saving imo is getting rid of the terrible shimano pads and replacing with koolstop etc.
One ride in the rain and the shimano pads end up like heavy grit sandpaper.0
