I'm looking for some new gloves. I've got full on winter waterproof gloves and I've got some thin gloves that will go under mitts, but what I'm looking for is something to wear when the conditions are in between. What I'm looking for is something to wear when it is
- dry
- temp range in the 6 to 12 degrees so my hands don't freeze for the first part of the ride or sweat for the second part.
- windproof
- breathable
What should I be looking at?

TBH in that temperature range I would be wearing normal padded fingerless gloves.0

6-12 I'd just be wearing the Prendas DeFeet ones.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Thanks for the replies. I tend to ride early on a morning so often it is cold at the start of the ride but warms up during the morning. With what I have now I either have cold hands to start with or very sweaty hands at the end.
Was thinking the Assos Early winter gloves might fit the bill?0 -

This is reassuring news; just ordered the DeFeet ones. At the mo I'm finding it a bit chilly for fingerless but nowhere near cold enough for the winter Altura gloves which end up soaked with sweat.0

Yeah, those should really fit the bill. In fact, I can get down to perhaps even 3 degrees with the DeFeet ones.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

...below 10c, Altura Raceline for me...I find them very comfy, not to bulky, lovely cuff and pull off tab and keep me toasty well down the single figure temp scale...0

Assos Early Winter gloves are perfect for the temp range you stated. When the temp drops a bit, you can add a pair of thin liner gloves. Colder still and decide if you should be out on a bike - if yes, add their lobster outer and watch out for ice!

Those DeFeet gloves. Do they come up the same size as other gloves I'm normally a medium should I get the same size?
I read somewhere they might come up small?
Cheers0 -
I ordered large and I think i have fairly large hands - seems to work fine for me. I dont think they're as restrictive as other gloves - being more kinda stretchy.0

My Wiggle order arrived on my desk today and the medium DeFeet gloves fit me perfectly, so their size guide is good. Might take them for a spin tonight...0

Early Winters (especially the older 851 ones through the Outlet Shop) are fantastic gloves. In the Highlands, I'd wear them pretty much 6 months a year, layering up, as above, as necessary with Assos Lobsters. No other gloves needed except summer mitts. Not cheap but fantastic value.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
I am very happy with these from Halfords.

The backs stop the wind even when damp and the palms stop me overheating.
I do get fairly hot so they probably would not suit anyone who doesn't.0 -
Just ordered a pair of defeet, look good, while I was there put a pair of their oversocks in as well0

I just have a pair of MTB long fingered gloves that I put on when it's too cold for mitts anymore, which are good between ~6-12C, any hotter and I get sweaty hands during sustained climbs which is unpleasant. Down to 0C and slightly below I put glove liners on first and they work really well.
I have a pair of the Altura Night Vision 'waterproof' gloves which get horribly sweaty unless its close to or below freezing. I use them in the snow without the liners because they are so warm.0 -
Well I can report that the DeFeets were perfect on last night's ride with temps in the 5-7c range. Hands warm but bone dry. Palms / fingers very grippy. I did discover they readily attach themselves to anything velcro if you're not careful though; had to take them off when faffing with my front light.0
