Schwalbe One Tubeless punctured

I am running Schwalbe One 28mm with Stans latex on 6800 Ultegra wheels, approx 80psi
I went for a ride round the Isle of Wight Sunday and near the end i could hear my rear tyres hissing, i rode on for about 75 metres and it still hadn't sealed, I was surprised it didn't seal as the hole wasnt that big.
we sat the tyre with the hole towards the bottom in the hope it would eventually but it lost all pressure.
We then tried to pump it up to re-activate the sealant but it was having none of it.
Cue a very messy tyre off and inner tube put in place.
The tyres have done about 500 miles so far with no probs

Was i supposed to top up and ride to get it to seal or should i have stopped straight away?
The roads were very wet and i'm wondering if that had any bearing on it

What is the recommended way of repairing the tyre?

Matt

  • You are lucky. I have not had a puncture out on a ride all year until Saturday. On the Isle of Wight as well and I had 3.

Puncture fairy was active on Saturday - I had my first flat of the year but that was on the Dorset / Wilts border, and the damn fairy had had a nibble at one of the replacement tubes.

If I was going to ride tubeless, I would ride tubs.

Having been let down many, many times by almost every flavour of tyre slime available in my MTB days, I really cannot see the attraction of going tubeless. If you have enough slime in there, the tyres feel heavy and dead. If you don't, they, don't seal and you get an expensive taxi ride home.

If I could see an advantage to going tubeless on a road bike, I still wouldn't use them in the winter.

I seem to recall seeing an article for a company that has developed a small plug kit for high pressure tubeless tyres. Can't remember the name of the kit though. Anyone else heard of this?

wondering if its the same sort of stuff we used to use on Motorcycles.
We used to call them turds. Worked well though

I have one. Have never used it. Have yet to have a (detected) puncture in several 1,000km of tubeless commuting. Using Hutchinson Intensives, though, which are intended to be pretty tough.
  • Too big a hole? Dry sealant? Too little sealant? A few possible causes. Mine did puncture once, but it fixed itself

I've ridden One tubeless since May, the number of punctures has decreased substantially. I live in an area where thorns and sharp flint are par for the course. I've had two punctures in the last two weeks, both cuts, most likely flint, fortunately it's got to the stage where the rear One is as good as done in any case. So, no magic bullet but the tyres are repairable from the inside and I've had no problems so far with repairs.

It seems to me that sealant doesn't work as well in high pressure tyres, for the most part even quiet significant holes will seal on the MTB, more than a mm or so on the road bike and the holes don't tend to seal. Thorns and the like seal nicely.

I have that very kit and HAVE used it (on an MTB tyre) and it works very, very effectively.

I've run Schwalbe tubeless for the last couple of years. Killed one with a massive rip in the sidewall due to hitting a rock and have had two un-sealed punctures, one big thorn and a small self taping screw. With both punctures I fitted an inner tube to get home, then cleaned the tyre thoroughly on the inside and fixed a regular patch over the hole on the inside. Both times it worked fine until I threw the tyres out as there was no rubber left on the carcass.

Great tyres, and I reckon I've had fewer punctures using them, but they need replacing more often than some due to the softer grippy rubber compound wearing pretty quick.
