SRAM 10 speed quick link

Whilst out riding yesterday I managed to snap my chain, I took out the broken link and fixed it with a SRAM quick link but my question is are these meant to last or are they simply a "get you home" device and then put a new chain on??

    no, they're meant to be permanent - it's the normal installation method for sram and kmc chains, so i'd be surprised if there wasn't already one in your chain somewhere.
