    This should do the trick:

Or you could go for the original flat bar version, with carbon bars as well as seat post: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/ear ... e-ec061267

Something like this is your best bet if/when he is big enough though. One where its a balance bike (that they learn to balance, steer and brake on) at first, that you then attach crank and pedals to.

My daughter had the earlier version and it worked a treat. She never had stabilisers, never had me holding the saddle, and never fell off.
The trouble with normal balance bikes is that they do their job, but then you stick the poor kid on a completely different bigger/heavier bike with pedals that they have to learn to control all over again!

Kokua Likeabike....we purchased one for our son when he was around 18 months old
from a bike shop in the Lakes.

Both kids learnt to ride with it and we still have it, they mess around with it in the garden,
    they are 8 & 10 now !!

    Money well spent.

    They look really nice.

The claim that their 16" one is "nearly, if not 'THE' lightest 16" bike" is pushing it a bit though.
At 7.5kg the 5.6kg Early Rider 16" is nearly 2kg lighter. Thats means its over a third heavier!

No matter how good a balance bike is, I still feel its a bit wasted unless the pedals go onto the same bike.
Would have thought you could get them peddling sooner too as you are not waiting for them to grow into the bigger bike with pedals on.

That BMW looks like a great idea until you look at the weight of the bike. The Islabikes Rothan is 3.5kg for 6kg of the BMW without pedals. Then the Cnoc, which is the first bike with pedals for Islabikes is 6kg so over 2kg lighter than the BMW with pedals. I understand that it does both, but it seems like a compromise all around.

My daughter had a really rubbish balance bike that we were given and she used it from 2 until the day she was 4 when she was given a Cnoc 16" and within 1 hour she was riding unaided in the local park. I know this has been the case for a few other children... The Early Rider bikes look good though, I have to say.

The small flat bar Early Rider made me want more children when I saw it lol. Have not seen the drop bar one. Looks a bit OTT perhaps but we should never poo poo diverse bikes I guess.
The 16" one is belt drive too.

Not sure if the BMW one we had was as heavy. It probably was but It may have been a bit lighter as it was a very different design to the new ones.
The concept is still the best though I think and it worked seamlessly for us.

It got a lot of comments in the park too, but not as many as the BMW sledge I got at the same time.
Just noticed they make even sexier ones now!

Mad paying that much, I bought my lad a wooden balance bike off eBay for 30 quid and that did the trick, 3 ten minute sessions on his bike and he was away on his own.
  • I was walking my dogs in Stanley Park in Blackpool recently. There is a nice BMX track there that is well used but that day there was a well organized meeting with clubs from far and wide. PA system, marquees and loads of well kitted out bikers.
I wandered over to take a look at what was going on. As I arrived, a balance bike race for under 4's was just about to start.
A starting grid of wide eyed children looked down on the daunting initial slope in fear/hope with enthusiastic helpers ready to run behind them to keep them going on the uphill bits.
My initial impression was that it would all end in tears, but my heart was warmed to see the sheer joy on the faces of all involved as they ploughed on regardless.
If there's a better way of enjoying a morning with your nipper, I've yet to see it.
  • Brilliant. Thanks for all of the good advice!
