I have the new 11speed 105 on my new bike but wish to change the 12-25 cassette on the back to a minimum of 12-28 or preferably a 30 tooth ring, I have been told by a couple of people if I go to a 30 tooth cassette I won't need to change the rear mech but I always believed anything more than a 28 on shimano needs a long cage mech. Please help

All the info required is here in the relevant derailleur section.

Shimano don't do an 11-speed cassette with a 30t option. Your options are 11-28t or 11-32t, the latter of which will need a medium rear cage.

Edit: Campag do an 11-speed 12-29t cassette though.
  • I am not sure about 105 but i am running a 11 - 32 cassette on a short cage 9 speed Sora derailleur with no problems at all.
  • I think it depends on the hanger/ frame set up.
I am running an 11-32 cassette with a shimano 105 short cage. This is on a Ribble Gran Fondo

Buy the cassette first and try it making the necessary adjustments to the derailleur, check the chain length.
BTW there is a post in Road Beginners (Help I need smaller gears - what can I do? A Guide), second post from the top, 16 pages of useful information.
