Spokes

Having just purchased a new 18" BMX bike for my daughter, I could not help notice the bend on the spokes, basically the spokes coming from the centre of the hub are bent over the outside of the spokes coming from the outside of the hub, therefore they are bent, yet could easily pass on the inside without touching the outer spoke. Hope that makes sense, I have looked around at a few other bikes and this seems common practice, can anyone explain why they do this? It looks ugly as well.

    Don't worry about it.

The spoke is meant to go under and over like that.

I suspect the curvature is amplified because the bike has little wheels.

That's right. The spokes on my Bike Friday's 20in wheels look similar although the bend is not so extreme as those 18in ones pictured.

The crossing behind the 3rd crossing gives the spokes from inside the hub a better, more stable pulling angle.
  • Could be worse...
