Hi Guys and Girls I'm getting the Garmin810 http://www.wiggle.co.uk/garmin-edge-810 ... e-and-hrm/ for Christmas and noticed that the unit doesn't come with the maps, it comes with basemaps which I believe isn't that great :(

I see you can download maps for free from ridewithgps.com and talkytoaster how easy is it to do? can anyone explain it in simple form for me?

or would it be better to buy the maps from Garmin??

Thanks :)

Don't buy the maps from Garmin; far too expensive. Go to the DC Rainmaker site where there's a link somewhere to download the maps free or cheaply.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • To answer the OP's question, it's very easy. You're going to need to buy an SD Micro card for the Garmin though.

Here are the instructions and links:

    http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/down ... 00810.html

I've been using these open source maps for yonks with no issues whatsoever.

You can download free maps from Talktoaster. Instructions are on the site. RidewithGPS is not for maps. It is for creating routes to follow and is very good for that.
  • Thanks Guys for your help, I have loked at both and tbh I'll have to see which one I find easiest :(

with Talktoaster for the Garmin 810 which file is the best to download??

You want one of the first two options. Which one you go for depends on whether you want contour lines or not. Personally I don't use contour lines on my Garmin as the screen is too small to make much sense of them.

Use the guide in here: http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/foolproof-course-navigation-on-the-garmin-edge-800/to set up your unit for following routes. The 810 should be pretty much the same as the 800.

This is exactly what I did.

Go to the dcrainmaker site, there is a "How to" section. In there is an article giving really simple step-by-step instructions as to what you need to do.

I did it when my 810 arrived a few weeks ago, was nice and simple (and quick) and the maps are perfect.

lol sorry mate, I have just trying to figure this thing out as no matter how easy it is I'm not so good at this kind of stuff.

I've also gone to dcrainmakers site and followed the instructions although instead of recieving an email to say the map is ready it just downloaded, guessing this is ok.

Then when I go to transfer the data onto a microsd card (with adapter) dc says
"Then, simply copy/move the gmapsupp.img file right inside the GARMIN directory on your Micro-SD card."

but in the folder it is already named 'Garmin' and not 'gmapsupp' if I double click 'Garmin' it then says 'Maps' if I double click again it says 'Openfietsmap Lite(GBR)' and if I open that there is a load of files...

Not sure if that makes sense, I'm guessing I just make a file on the microsd card called 'Garmin' and just move it over, but then as it's already named 'Garmin' I could then move it over??

appreciate the help, sorry if sounds thick

  • So you have downloaded a something and put it somewhere.
Place this something if it is a file into a folder on your micro sd card. The folder must be called garmin, the something name is irrelevant as long as it has the extension .img
  • Nope no extension .img

  • Nope no extension .img

Please give a clue to what you have.

On second thoughts this may be the answer.

  • The file I downloaded is in a folder called 'Garmin'
when I double click then becomes 'maps'
double click again becomes 'Openfietsmap Lite(GBR)'
which then opens a list of files of differering sizes which look like they possibly are all the program if that makes any sense at all.

    thanks for your help

  • Go here
    http://osm.pleiades.uni-wuppertal.de/garmin/generic_new/28-10-2014/d8b7e2b20c0e7344f48d3afb7e3cd473/

    Download the last file " osm_generic_new_gmapsupp.zip "

Unzip the file then place the file called gmapsupp.img into a folder on your micro sd card called garmin.

It should look something like this. I.E. A top level folder called garmin with the img files directly in it.

  • Really appreciate your help

I managed to copy it onto the sdcard in a file called Garmin

which then displays gmapsupp.img with the file size 518,688

when I double click on that it says file is corrupted and won't open further??

just checking if that was ok??

    thanks again

  • You do not need to open the file and you probably (almost certainly) do not have a program capable of opening map img files.
Go to your garmin menu, under system and map , there should be a map list. Ensure your new map is enabled.
Alternatively get a gps fix and zoom in on the map you should get a detailed map view.

PS Single things on a pc are files, their containers containing multiple ones are either folders or directories but certainly not files.
  • Thanks freezing that is fantastic again appreciate the help :)
