Scott Scale 720 - advice on buying circa £1000-1300 hardtail

Hello all,

I'm looking to get back in to mountain biking after a very long absence, so long that my 1995 Kona Fire Mountain still has smoke and dart tyres on it! I primarily want to get fit. I will be on road a bit so having a fork I can lock out or minimise would be a help but I expect to primarily get out on to easy / medium trails quickly. I don't see myself downhilling / racing / jumping, but equally I would rather over spec now so as to not need to upgrade in future.

So I need some quick advice on best options as all the terminology and options are making my head spin!

I've got as far as deciding on a 27.5 hardtail. I had assumed I could get something pretty nice well under £1000 but I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to be more like the £1000-1300 bracket. Certainly no more.

I'm happy with a 2013 / 2014 model but I would only buy new.

On One 456 seems an option from what I've heard.

Pedalon are doing the 2014 Scott Scale 720 for £1300 until tonight only. I can't say I am qualified to compare specs, but does anyone have experience of this bike or its spec? It's £1600-1900 elsewhere, seems to be a lot for the money but I wonder if I would really notice the difference between that and something at £1000 or so?

I could head over to Pedalon on the weekend to test a few. They stock Giant / Trek / Cannondale too. I'm not fussed about colours or makes as long as I get something that will last me - no appetite for upgrading / building / tinkering.

What other bikes could / should I be considering in this price range???

Is the Scott worth the extra £300 over the On One?

Cheers, Neil

  • If you'd consider a 29-er rather than 650/27.5 then might be worth taking a look at the Total Fitness Bath website - clearance section. Generally Specialized bikes but then tend to e=sell off old stock (last year) at pretty good prices. Last time I looked they had a Carve/Crave in medium and large and a Stumpjumper Evo (1x10) with some serious discounts.

Re the bikes you note - never had an OnOne but plenty on here seem to rate it. The Scott HT bikes are usually pretty race focused rather than all mountain.

Definitely worth considering 2nd hand - you'll get much more for your money.

For me the key thing was to get a good frame and forks as the rest can be easily upgraded or replaced as it wears. I bought a Carve as I was after an XC bike. The only upgrade I have done is the brakes to XT disc brakes and rotors which made a big difference. You may want to keep in mind the spec the bike comes as any potential upgrades.
  • Of all the makes you mention Cannondale seem to be late to the 650b party, thought they would have brought out a 27.5 wheeled Trail range for 2015. Will be losing sales there.
And a shame Giant don't do 120mm forked 750b hardtails.
