6 speed build up
Hi I am building up an old vitus carbone 9 and wanted to
Use period parts as I can't stretch to the dura ace 8 speed sti Ievers i am going down the route of index downtube shifters which are sach huret and a dura ace rear mech . The cassette I was looking at a freewheel 14×28 6 speed to get me over the hills in the peaks my question is whether to go for the 8 speed dura ace 7402 over the 7401 which was bought out for 7 speed but said was limited to a 26 tooth rear? Any help would be grateful cheers Stef

Cassettes and freewheels are two different things - a cassette slides onto a hub with a splined projecting freehub body and secures with a lock ring whereas a freewheel comes as a complete entity & screws onto a fitting on the hub. You can't interchange the two. There are not many 8 speed freewheels around and you might have a problem with dropout width to fit one if the bike is very old.0

I have a 14-28 six speed FREEWHEEL with 42X52 chainrings with friction downtube shifters - it works fine and the 42-28 seems ok except for very steep climbs (probably it is just me....).
If you use friction shifters instead of 'indexed' you'll always be able to get the chain to run smoothly because you are not constrained by the indexing - BUT a little more skill is needed, than just 'click and go'.
If you use indexed shifters, make sure their indexing is compatible with the rear gear spacing.

Have you got a Vitus 979 Dural or have you got a Vitus Carbon 9. The reason I ask is that the Vitus Carbon 9's are as rare as hens teeth and immediately distinguishable from the 979.
Pictures please. I'd love to see that.
If you want a pair of wheels with a screw attachment, then there is where you'll have some problems. You may have to buy a pair of hubs on ebay and get them built up.
What is the width of the rear stays?
Screw on Freewheels are still out there:

Regina used to be the one to have. Although I am pretty sure, Campagnolo hubs have a different thread size.

I might have some RX100 STI going soon if I do not use then on my Vitus build.
The point is if you can't afford DA 8 speed then buy RX100, 1056, 6400 e.t.c STI's. If you wait you might get lucky and pick a set of DA 8 speed sTI's for £50 becuase the seller though one was broken but it turned out they worked just fine. Never got that lucky since.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
Cheers for the info, it's defo the vitus 9 and the patterned weave in the carbon.I believe it's called the vc9
Because it comprised of 9 tubes. Why I asked about the freewheel is I already have a set of mavic open pro's with campag hubs running a six speed freewheel and was thinking of putting a seven speed screw on freewheel and wondered if the thread was universal between hub manufacturers en shim v campag ta0 -
Freewheel threads are universal i.e. ISO = ITA = BSA. French and BMX is different though. You should have no problems running a narrow 7 speed freewheel on a frame designed for 6 speed - but may be limited to a 13 top sprocket as any bigger may foul the seatstay. Only way of confirming is to try it.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
