2nd set of wheels

Guys/Gals,

The Reet'ard 29' wheels on my Dirty Disco and perfectly fine apart from the difficulty in changing my tyres from my 28c Marathon Plus to my Continental Cyclo Cross 35c tyres, I do this on a regular basis (once a week), I use my Marathons for work then change to the Conti's for my days out, this is becoming a pain and I would like a 2nd set of wheels.

I've always wanted to learn how to build a wheel so this seems like perfect opportunity todo it.

I don't want to spend alot of money on this build (£200max), so far I've been considering the following
I would like black hubs/spokes/rims/nipples etc
The only specific, the hubs must be 6bolt not centrelock

Shimano M756 xt front/rear 36spoke hubs (black)- approx £55
Spokes ???
Rims ???
Nipples ???
Rim Tape ???

Has anyone done anything similar? any advice? Hubs, 32 or 36 spoke?

Matthew

  • 36 is OTT, 32 can be OTT if you use them for racing, whilst it's OK for anything else. 28 is plenty for light riders and everyday use.

Novatec 771/772 are better hubs than XT in my view.
Spokes either Sapim race or Sapim D-light if you want to go for a light (and probably less durable) set.
Rims: tubed = Archetype, Tubeless the new Pacenti SL 25 at 75 quid a pop are very well priced for the size
Nipples: brass, alloy is for bankers who can afford to throw everything away when they (inevitably) seize or crumble.

  • Ugo,

Thank you for replying, I think I had the cheaper Novatec hubs on my CX4 & they did really well with the milage and terrain I covered.
I think I'll look at 32spokes, my riding is very mixed and some terrain is very rough (Peak District off road trails) so strength is key for me.

That looks to be my shopping list sorted :)
  • Mavic Aksium One Disc?

    They're £147 in Evans Cycles.

Stiffness is key not strength. If a 28 spoke wheel is stiff enough can it can be it will survive to off camber side loads.

Anyway any decetnwheelset will cost more than £200 if good rims hubs and spokes are used. If you build yourself you can save the labour but you'll need patience if its your first set.

  • At some point over the coming weeks I intend to pop into a (reasonably) local wheel building specialist to see what hubs/spokes/rims etc that they stock and see of they can get the above items listed by Ugo.

I'll then make a decision as to what items I shall purchase. I'm not in any rush but would like the parts before xmas so I can take them to work and build whilst at work (during the change freeze) as there isn't likely to be any work and this will help pass the 12hr shifts.

I've had a bike donated that requires a little work to get it fully functioning, the wheels also need truing so I intend to take them apart and rebuild them as my practice wheels :)

Just Riding Along is local to you... you can pop in and get everything you need. They stock lots of rims, spokes and probably a few hubs too. Plus they are nice guys and I'm pretty sure they can give you helpful advice

Just riding along is the local wheel building specialist :) , I wasn't sure if you would be aware of them or not. I cycle past them on my work commute, sadly they aren't open at the times I pass but I've always fancied popping in there :)

Thank for your help Ugo, I shall report back over Christmas/New Year

Pacenti SL25 rims from Planet-X are 30 quid (half-price) and Novatec hubs would be my recommendation for value and durability and ideal for first-time builders. JRA will sell you the rims-only for £80 each!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

CL 25 and SL 25 are not the same rims

Ugo, what are the CL25s like and would they make a decent wheel for mainly road riding on a disc braked bike? The price is attractive but it won't be good value for money if it doesn't give me any real benefit over my present wheels (Freedom Cruz disc rims with shimano Shimano FH-M475 hub) otherwise I would rather pay a bit more for the rims.

No idea about the CL 25... but you can read all about them here

  • Nothing too much has changed, apart from not having the Dirty Disco anymore. My new bike comes with some Fulcrum CX77 racing wheels with 21 spokes per wheel :o they are very smooth but my word are they a pain to get the tyre off when you get a puncture!

Now looking to buy 2 sets of the same wheels and sell the Fulcrums to part fund it.
