Winter wheels

Hopefully a short thread and maybe of some use to others.
Got to replace my back wheel, currently riding the OEM DT Swiss Axis 2.0s. Hub has gone on the rear and as they're 2 1/2 years old I may as well get a new wheelset. Got some carbon 50s or the summer but as they're tubs gonna need some new wheels for winter.
As far as I can see my options are ranging from r501 c30s at £75 to RS31s at £130 with the rest (mainly shimano) in between. Would be loathed to spend more than this really and just wondering what real benefits you'd get over the 501s to the RS range etc. weight is not an issue but aero would be preferred (I know it's hardly aero at 30mm but still)
Any help would be much appreciated

Wheels really shouldn't be consumable itemsI'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0

Vision Team 30? Some good discounts on these eg planet x.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

Cheapest I can find them is £170 and not convinced they'd be worth the extra £40, would also take it into a new price range where other wheels would be better alternatives I think? Thanks anyway though.0

2x New bearings for 10 to 15 and you're ready for the winter.
No, the rear hub has completely gone, already tried changing the bearings, have a nice front wheel now but back will definitely need replacing hence the original question0 -
Think FSA & VIsion are the same. Anyway the cheapest I could see is 150 euro which is good. See

The RS30s/31s aren't bad wheels but they are a little sluggish to get going and not that sprightly for climbing...then again I only paid £100 for a set from Ribble last year and rode them all winter, in all weather. I did have to completely strip and service the hubs at the end of that, and have had to do the odd retrue but for the money they are ok. Spin well and, because of the hefty 30mm rim, can take the odd hit on a pothole that nighttime winter riding (even with decent lights) seems to inevitably bring.
I don't think I would call 30mm aero and I don't detect any benefit over my normal shallow rims of around 24mm. Then again, I only avg about 18-20 so maybe one needs to be quicker to get anything back for free.0 -
thanks all, went for the RS31s in the end from bike24 which worked out around £125 inc p+p. would've gone vision but they only had campag available at that price. Not too worried about weight - I could lose a kilo easily which would negate a few hundred grams here or there and i'll be commuting on these so a fairly bombproof wheel will be good.0

So how does that work then? Bearing in mind (deliberate pun) the workings of the hub, the structural loading of the spokes, the friction on the rim from the brake pads etc.Trail fun - Transition Bandit

and at the price of some of the wheels mentioned above, handbuilts aren't going to save you much, if anything.0
