What routes would you recommend from Caernarfon to, say, the Brecons?

The A roads I've driven don't appeal particularly, this route I've found http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3458722 takes some minor roads and heads west of Snowdonia down to Mach. and then heads inland. Lots of bumps away from the A roads! (Probably on the A roads too).

I think I'm going to plan a two dayer - catch the train to Bangor on the Friday, get down to Rhayader (115 miles by this route) by Saturday evening for a B&B then head for Abergavenny, then either Newport / Cardiff or Chepstow depending on who I can get to come along. My mate who never does as much training as he says he should and gets the bonk after 50 miles or so...

There's a sportive that does route this in September next year, £100 for which you get 4 food stops. They're advertising it as a day ride (180 miles +), why take one day at it when you can do it in two?

This looks like the Lon Las Cymru cycle route from Holyhead to either Cardiff or Chepstow. Rode it this year and it was really good. This is very lump indeed and two days would be good (or possible very bad) going.

Lots of advice on the CTC forum. The bridge (Barmouth I think) has been closed for a while and it details the alternative route plus other small section are unpaved and there are details about going round them.

They are called The Brecon Beacons, or The Beacons, not The Brecons.

The classic Audax in the UK is the Bryan Chapman Memorial 600km - Chepstow to Menai and back.

Superb route in both directions - would make a fabulous tour.

From a couple of years ago - big diversion somewhere near Barmouth for a bridge being replaced:

I rode it from South to North and there was a head-wind all the way including the tail end of a hurricane which made going over the Gospel Pass interesting.
If I ride it again and do North to South I would expect it will be a head-wind all the way.
