new hub or new wheels?

My old/winter bike, its rear hub is not in a good way. The wheels are Shimano RX100 hubs with Mavic MA40 rims. So I want to replace that hub or wheels. Also I've just got a turbo trainer and want to have a spare crappy back wheel for that. Should I:

- get new wheels, eg Shimano R501 Wheels, and use current old back wheel for turbo trainer
or
- get a new hub, get LBS to replace hub, and get super cheap 2nd hand rear wheel from ebay or somewhere for turbo trainer

I want to keep it pretty low budget for this old bike. But I don't really want to go backwards in quality either.

What's wrong with the hub? I'm not familiar with that hub, but expect it's cup and cone. A clean, new bearings and some grease might give it a new lease of life...

The part where the bearing run in, on the hub itself, is pitted/damaged.
  • You need to step back in time to find a shop that will do that.
Even the cheapest rebuild on a Tiagra hub will set you back the same money as a pair of R 501 or more. That said, if you need to carry load, your wheel is more suited to do that than the R 501, so there might be a method in the madness.
Only worth if the rims are in a really good state, MA 40 were nice rims!

Oh right, I didn't know that. Is it the me-supplyng-the-bits aspect or the age/style of the bits aspect which makes that so? I suspect my LBS may do it, but I'm guessing, maybe not.

You mean if I'm big/heavy/fat?.. no definitely not.

The rims are in OK state. Not great, not bad.

So I guess buying a new wheel set is the way to go. Thanks.

Does anyone know how Scott Syncros wheels off a Scott Speedster 20 (2015) bike compare with Shimano R501s?
  • Actually in an identical situation to you right now and was wondering the same thing. Running DT Swiss Axis 2.0s on a spec allez 105. LBS said there's not an awful lot of point getting a new hub due to cost. After a bit of searching found r501 c30s for £75 up to RS31s for £130 with RS11s and RS21s in between. Not biased to shim but these seem the best offers ATM.

Maybe worth looking at them? Single wheel replacement doesn't seem worth it.
