What do you need it to do? My advice would also be to have a quick look on Garmin's support site at the forums for both devices to see what the current issues are.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Ignoring the post from the resident Garmin hater who has chosen to moan about them on just about every thread of late ; it depends what you want from the device.
Over the 810, the 1000 has a bigger and better screen clarity, segment alerts , a Di2 gear indication and can alert you to SMS messages and calls on your phone. However, the 810 does just about everything else it can do. As for call and SMS alerts; assign a ringtone to anyone important you're expecting contact from and need to respond to and that solves that problem. Screen size and clarity is good enough for me on the 810 as I rarely look at the map page and just have turn alerts flash up while I'm on a performance page.
I've never had a problem with any of my Garmin devices and I'm sure Barshaker will be along in a moment to confirm he hasn't had any problems with his 1000 either.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -

When you say you have the directions flash up, is that on the page giving time/distance/speed/cadence etc data? If so, how do you set it to do that? Just what I am looking for.....
To the OP - I'd go with the 810, I find the 1000 just too big and the added services it provides don't give me anything I need and thus aren't worth the extra cash.0 -

I thought I was being very objective The 810 has been out, what, 6 months longer? I suspect it's in better shape. There's still a question mark hanging over the battery life of the 1000 according to the last thread. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I will probably buy the 1000 (again) at some point in the future - but only when I'm confident that Garmin have ironed out the mountain of issues I experienced the first time around. As for being a Garmin-hater, I've had 3 Forerunner 305s, a Forerunner 405CX (which, I admittedly gave away (because the 305 was better) to someone whose Forerunner 110 packed in twice), an Edge 800 and the (returned) Edge 1000. I have plenty of years of experience with Garmin.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -

Select a course to follow and hit Go. Then swipe across to your data page. When you approach a junction that you turn at (as opposed to a bend or just passing a side road) the 1000 will swap back to the map page and will zoom in on the junction.
Once the move is completed, it returns to the data page you were looking at. It is a really nice feature.
Yep, as Philthy3 said, my 1000 experience has been problem free. It's a great bit of kit.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Doesn't the 810 do the same thing?
When I'm riding a course, the 810 switches over to the map page as I approach a turn on the course. Once completed, it goes back to my data page. (Or you can tap the screen to dismiss the directions immediately).0 -
I got the 1000 about 6 weeks ago. Previous 500 user.
Its pretty awesome and going back to the 500 on occasion does make it seem pretty dated.
Only gripe is that since IOS 8 the phone alerts don't work. I think Garmin are blaming Apple. I am sure it will get sorted with an update.
Screen is great. I don't find it too big but would advise on getting the K-Edge XL mount as it improves the position greatly.0 -

It does and he was just responding to the question of how you do it. Provided turn by turn notification is on, it will alert you to turns on a course if you're on another page screen.
The other disadvantage for the 1000 for me, is it's overall size. I use a 3T Integra stem with the built in Garmin mount. It's tight with an 810 so I can't see a 1000 fitting.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -

Even the 800 does this - just turn on Turn Guidance in the course settingsROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -

Thank you, will give it a whirl on my next ride.0 -
Thanks guys for all your input, I currently have the 500 and was interested in the 1000 but had heard the battery life wasn't too great and that the 810 was much better.
I don't race at all but love going out on exploratory rides, and like the idea that the misses can see where I am should anything happen. Love the idea of having a map to follow.Jamis Xenith Endura Sport 2012

The battery life is fine. I've done two 100 mile rides in the last few weeks. Both have been completed with around 50% remaining.
Battery life improved considerably with one of the recent OS upgrades.
Battery life of the 1000 is now around 7% an hour when using navigation and mapping.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Has anyone else experienced Garmin 1000 over calculating speed and mileage ,also when you load ride to Connect it shows what it says on Garmin then Strava showing correct mileage and speed .
Thanks for any replies Ronnie0 -
Go by Garmin and not Strava.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

The results are pretty much identical when loaded from a 1000. Rarely more than 0.1mph difference, normally no difference.
Altitude climbed is still guess work but this applies to any GPS.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Found out that it is my sensor that is giving the high speed and mileage .

Which sensor are you using? The new one?ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Depends what you want. I want as few important data points on my screen as possible--3s power, HR, cadence, distance, grade (that's a really personal choice). I don't even have speed on my first screen.
So for me I still don't even see a reason to upgrade my Garmin 800 yet.0 -
Was using the GSC10.
