using bike stand as a vice??

so as the title states has any-one ever used their bike stand clamp as a vice? i am going to buy a new set of mtb forks and want to cut the steerer tube down and as i don't have a vice at home to use, would the clamp be a suitable alternative??

do you mean the clamp will move too much or the whole bike stand?
