I'm trying to do a one off removal of the BB on my girlfriends BSO, to be replaced with a cartridge BB. Problem is I can't get the damn thing off. Pic below showing the offending item, and the tool I think I need. If anyone in London has one that I could borrow I'd be hugely grateful.

Soak the cup in plusgas and a metric 'jussie. and turn the right way. Imperial 'jussies won't work
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    You just need a spanner

I've tried removing it with everything I have (adjustable wrench, spanner, hit it with a hammer), after spraying liberally with GT85. I can't get the leverage without the proper tool unfortunately.

Are you turning it the right way? Left hand thread on the left of the frame.

Also remove the gubbins from the other side and spray a penetrating oil in from the other side....

I tried GT85 sprayed from both sides (the other side I got off, 36mm spanner...). Any suggestions on the best stuff to spray on?

Plusgas works well also smack the cup hard on the flat face with a steel headed hammer, the shock can often loosen the debris gumming it up.

Not a good sign though as I have never had any problem removing those (my hack bike still uses a period Shimano C&C BB with seals in the cups!).

  • Is this the same problem you have? If so, I usually find his vids excellent:
