Shimano 10 speed triple with 11 speed groupset?

I want to standardise on 11 speed, but want to keep my 105 triple chainset on one bike. I will obviously need to keep the old left shifter and f/d. Any likely problems with chain/chainring compatibility? Please dont ask why I need 33 gears.

  • Should be fine, 10 speed cranks work fine with 11 speed. Only issue might be with the rear derailleur cage and getting enough chain wrap.

Thanks raisin - I may give it a go. I guess the chain wrap issue would be due to lack of clearance between sprockets when the chain-line is angled (crossover gears). I avoid big/big and small/small anyway so I may get away with it.

I'd replace the front mech with an 11sp one - narrower cage.

Problem is, no triple front mechs in 11 speed.

Ah I'd forgotten that. Well, it's only a very minor difference in size, and triples aren't the slickest shifting set-up anyway :D

I've no idea what Raisin means my insufficient chain wrap though - you'll nees to change the mech and cassette but if the largest sprocket is tha same size as yr 10sp I can't see any issues - ah, unless he means that you can't get a long cage 11sp rear mech (GS), so you may encounter set-up problems on small/small as a standard road mech won't/may not take up enough slack on a triple.

Looks like the long cage RDs for 11 speed will take a 41 teeth capacity, so a triple will still work fine.

Thanks all, think I'll give it a go.
