I want to convert my wheels to tubeless. Stans recommends the freeride kit but that only comes with schrader values and in need presta, is then anyway to do this with out drilling my rim. Can i get the rim strip with presta anywhere

    Why the Freeride kit?

Plenty of kits with presta valves.

  • I need a rim strip that is 27mm width, 650b. Is there any others I can use with Stans.

Use duct tape and whatever valves you like.

Or buy the strip and valves separately......

Works perfectly well, gorilla tape is supposed to be best and what I'm using, cost about £3 for a roll that will do a large number of wheels, then bought a couple of DT Swiss valves for around £5 each.

Used Gorilla tape on all my wheels and whatever valves available, cheap and very easy to use and it works.

Another shout for Gorilla tape here, just a couple of quid through Amazon, bought the Stans fluid and valves separately, make sure you have a decent track pump/c02 inflater to.... err........ get it up.

Its a roll of tape you cut to length....the same roll can be used on any sized wheel. This is tubeless so it's not normal rim tape either.

  • Hi Cyd et al..
I'm replying to this thread because several contributors appear to have extensive experience of tubeless setting up...
I'm running a set of second hand (i.e. I don't know how old they are..) wheels on my Ellsworth Moment..
I get loads of pinch flats, being a heavy and clumsy rider :( .
Everyone says I should be going tubeless as this would remove the pinch flat scenario..
    I've bought a Joe's setup kit..
    I've cleaned the rims..
fitted the tape.. and then the tyre.. (Specialised enduro..)
Inflated the tyre..once for about thirty seconds..
When I say inflated, I mean got air into it without a valve to keep the air in, got the casing to seat and stay up..
then I noticed that there was a cut in the casing.. so I've patched that.. but now I just can't get the casing/rim seal to hold air...
The rims are Mavic EX729s.. they've seen some wear..but have no serious dents..the original rim tape is still present, and covers all the spoke holes..The Rim tape that came with the Joe's kit is smoothly seated..but it doesn't start to come up the side of the rim..but covers all the base of the rim..
    Am I wasting my time...?
Should I get myLBS to have a look and confirm that the rims will take tubeless?
(Unfortunately the LBS is quite a hike away..and I wanted to get things sorted today..as I'm busy tomorrow and next week...)
Sorry for such a verbose post..but the issue is driving me nuts!

  • Update..
Got a Maxxis to seat.. but being a mean s*d I'm using existing used tyres..
now can't get the casing to stay up..because of the puncture holes in the casing..
Will the Joe's sealant seal these thorn holes?
Do you have to wait for the soapy water to dry off before injecting the sealant?

Yes, the sealant should seal the thorn holes (and any general porousity of the sidewalls, which may also affect ability of the tyre to hold air). If using old tyres (especially ones that weren't designed to be run tubeless, you may find you need to smear the inside of the tyre with a thin film of sealant to get things moving.

No, you don't have to wait for anything to dry out - once you've got the bead to seat, you're good to go with the sealant.

lastly - if you'having trouble getting tyres to seat, try popping a tube in, inflating that until beads pop into place, then carefully deflate and unseat just one side to allow you to remove the tube and install the valve. Then, when you go to inflate the tyre tubeless, you only have to focus on the bead on one side - the other is already in place.
