Yep - Viewranger is great - you can highlight and save areas of the "open cycle map" to your phone so that you've got them to refer to even when you haven't got a signal, or better still, you can turn off your mobile data to extend your battery life, but still have access to a basic map.
If you're going off the beaten track and want more sophisticated mapping, your can also purchase and save OS 1:25,000 scale maps tile-by-tile for the areas you need, rather than buying (and storing) the data for the whole of the country.0
