Mudguards

Last year I used a set of Crud Road Racer 2 mudguards on my Boardman Race for commuting. They worked well but various bits broke during a single winter and around 170 miles a week on rural (occasionally very muddy) roads.
What would people recommend? I don't care about aesthetics or whether they mark paint etc, I just want a set which work and will last more than one winter. I never ride with other people so not worried about long guards.

Thanks, have seen them for sale on a few websites. Are they well made and durable?Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

Raceblade Long are amazing, they take a battering. If they break SKS are more than happy to replace bits FOCAnd the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made.0

I ran two bikes last year doing a similar mileages to you. One had SKS raceblade longs and one had Crud2.
Both failed in some way by the SKS really fell to pieces, vibrations broke some of the clips (which I repaired by custom fitting bolts and screws from Cruds!) but the damage became terminal eventually.
The Cruds survived better but I got a fresh set this year as they are cheaper and will use the old set as spares.
You may do better on smoother rural roads (vs London/Surrey) but I won't buy Raceblades again.0 -
portland design full metal fenders. End of thread.0

I have a Boardman Road Comp and it has mudguard attachment points on the forks and stays.
I had Crud Racer for a year but they were fragile.
I now have http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... ortmudr345
These seem to be as good as the SCS I have on a hybrid.0 -

Smooth rural Somerset roads?????
Are you joking? It's all potholes, worn out surfaces and thick mud from farms. One of the roads on my commute on has grass growing along the centre.
My downhill bike with 200mm suspension couldn't smooth out some of these roads.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
I have Giant Defy mudguards, will fit other bikes and are well priced.
Lasting well after 2 years of daily winter use, I say winter but are fitted for 6 months of the year0 -
Cruds are as the name implies. I used them, they worked but wobbled all over the place, always needing adjustment and bits fell off. Heath Robinson would have been proud. Won't have them near another bike - I'd rather get wet! In my experience the SKS are much better.

I put one of these on this year, easy to fit and has worked well for me.

Just be careful if you have a very small framed bike as it doesn't fit quite as well but works fine.0 -
I think I might go for these

I don't appear to have any mudguard mounts on my frame or fork, these look like they don't need them, is that right?
Whats the difference between the 700c / 25-32c and the 700c / 23-32c? I'm using 25mm tyres.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
