Any chance it's just the valve clicking in the rim? Very common - it rattles in the valve hole.

Have you tried taping it in place to stop it moving? Works for me every time.

    Either like this: duct%20tape.jpg

    or like this: 59328_02_d.jpg

You can also wrap tape around the valve before putting it through the valve hole to make the valve 'thicker' and stop it rattling.

Freehub? Or it could just be spokes creaking or rubbing against each other. I assume the rear ones are cross-laced? Is the noise from the front, rear, or both?

I still think it's the valve stem personally.

Regluing a tyre shouldn't make any difference. Plus - if whoever glued it in the first place knew what they were doing, they would have put a couple of coats of glue on the rim before gluing the tyre. There should be no 'dry spots'.

My wheels, including clinchers, make all sorts of noises. No reason to give up on them.

The only good solution is to sell me the wheels at a ridiculous discount. And buy some very quiet clincher wheels.
  • If the ticking is all the time, pedaling and freewheeling, I would suspect the tub itself.
I have had tubs before (Wolbers were culprits) that tick when first fitted. Take them off and glue them back on again. I always suspected that the base tape on the tub was not taking the tub cement correctly, regluing always seemed to solve it.

Front wheel went first, lots of noise, clicking/ticking and sticky tape type rotational noise

The sticky tape noise is probably the thread pattern on the tarmac, it will disappear once it wears out a bit. The clicking ticking is typically the valve, but you say it's not, so maybe check the hub preload cap... too loose or too tight?

It's the spokes, if you don't do it yourself, I'll bloody well come round and oil them for you!
