I am newish to biking and have decided to upgrade from my second hand shed as am enjoying the biking.
I have a £600 budget and I have been looking at both these bikes.
The names don't mean much to me and I really don't know if they are good starter bikes or just rubbish.

Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Have you considered buying 2nd hand as you can get bikes that retail for £1k at half the price. Some people buy a bike and then decide that its not for them so why not.0

Problem is that my £600 budget is on the cycle to work scheme. I would have gone with a 2nd hand one again if they accepted c2w.
I have been riding for a few months now in all weather (its it strange i like riding in the torrential rain) and use the bike to commute everyday to work.0 -
I don't known if either of those bikes have mudguard fittings, if you are going to be commuting through the winter consider a bike that gives you the option to fit mudguards.0

I would look in the sales and find something like this :-
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/can ... e-ec054418
It is a 9 speed triple which gives a better gear range if you are just starting out. Are you thinking about commuting or just general riding. For commuting you will need mudguards, decent brakes, all weather gear, lights etc.
It soon gets expensive0 -

Haven't compared specs in great detail but how about that 300 quid Merlin and then spend the rest on nice add ons. Mudguards, decent lights etc.0

i have the lights and all the weather gear so I can use the full £600 on the bike. I did look at the felt and I have also found this one http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/cube-pel ... 81423.html. bit more but don't mind paying more if its a better bike0

Will JE James and Chain reaction accept the cycle to work scheme for heavily discounted bikes?
Paul's cycles definitely does:
