Torn between the following wheelset.
Vento Reaction CX with dura ace 28 cassette.
Or
Fulcrum Racing 5 cx wheelset with whatever campanolo cassette would equal 105 28.

Any suggestions? /experience of them

10 or 11 speed? Campagnolo do not neither miche cassette with a 28T sprocker. 27T and 29T yes but no 28T.

Miche do 10 speed and 11 speed cassettes that hava 12T start and 27T large cog, these are available in shimano or campagnolo form but a Shimano 10 speed or 11 speed cassette will be cheaper but the ratio's in 11 speed are quite limted.

  • Sorry 10 speed, what about wheelset? The cassette will go with a standard 46 cx specific chainset so want something that would also work as a commuter too. So maybe 27 be better than a 29 spin bike lol

unless I've misunderstood, you cant mix 10 speed shimano and campag cassettes. You can with 11-speed, but with 10, it's either all Shimano or all Campag (unless you use a shiftmate of some sort).
  • Really? Why is that, would of thought shimano cassette and campag would be exactly the same.

Atm I need to know whether I can buy fulcrum wheelset then put campag cassette on to be used with my shimano drive train.

Otherwise il have to buy the lower spec wheels as they are shimano freehub which means can use my current cassette (dura ace)

    Cheers

You have sort of misunderstood. The OP already has a Shimano cassette (I think) waiting for whichever wheel he buys. But it doesn't matter if it is 11 or 10 speed, the only way he will get it onto a Campag freehub is with the help of a lump hammer.

However, if he was running 11 speed, he could use an 11 speed Campag freehub with an 11 speed Campag cassette on an otherwise Shimano drivetrain (or vice versa) - so he could buy the Campag wheels at the extra cost of a Campag cassette. If it's 10 speed, the only solution is botching.

To the OP - I admire your optimism in assuming Shimano and Campag would be the same! This is what the freehubs look like - as you can see, you aren't going to be able to swap cassettes....

  • Thanks rolf,
I had a inkling that that was so as been trolling around Sheldon browns blog on this.

Just frustrating that wheels aren't universal.
Will get the vento Reaction CX wheels with shimano freehub then wack my dura ace 28 cassette onto it as that will 100%work with shimano drive train.

Shame as those fulcrum 5s looked great, apart from campag freehub lol.

Is it a special price on the campag freehub version only? As you can get them with shimano freehubs too.

If you really want them, you can buy a Shimano freehub for the rear wheel. They cost about £60 but you should be able to recoup a lot of that selling the unused Campag freehub you remove from the wheel.

You know the Fulcrum Racing 5 and the Campagnolo Vento are basically the same wheels (same factory etc)?
